Well said by a funeral director colleague of mine.
Working with an Independent
Family Funeral Home
The vast majority of Canadian funeral homes are locally owned and operated. They are managed and run by families who have close ties to the communities they serve. In many instances these families have provided support for years and decades and sometimes even longer, to the local families they help with these needs.
Depending on the size of the community, you may know your director personally, your children may play on the same sports team or you may attend the same service on the weekend. One thing is for certain, when you need their assistance they will always be there to support you in every way imaginable. They understand that you are hurting and understand their role within the community.
Sometimes national media stories will focus on various industries or professions. They try to create stereotypes and try to influence public opinion. It is very frustrating to see all the good that is done by those in the funeral profession undermined by these sound bites.
Always remember, when you are dealing with a locally owned, locally managed funeral home, we will do our upmost to earn your respect. We will carefully explain what your choices are. No one will try to pressure you. We want you to have the information you need so that you are comfortable with the decisions you make.
