Attention Dark Chocolate Lovers ‼️
Some not so great news…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A recent Costumer report tested 28 dark chocolate bars and found they all contained levels of Heavy metals; cadmium and lead.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eating just 1 once (28g) daily would put an adult over the harmful limit for these heavy metals.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are the risks?
Frequent exposure to lead for example can affect brain development in children or lead to nervous system problems, reduced immune function, kidney damage, hypertension or reproductive issues in adults.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what if you consume dark chocolate daily?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some tips to reduce exposure:
- Evaluate how much you are consuming (bars, dark chocolate chips, cocoa powders, protein bars etc.)
- Try to stick to brands with lower levels of these heavy metals (link with brands and amounts below)
- Limit intake to 1-2 ounces 2x/week max
- Find alternative treats like oats balls, dates, nuts or seeds
- Use unsweetened carob chips in baked goods instead of dark chocolate
- Try maca powder in smoothies instead of cocoa
- Limit or avoid dark chocolate intake while pregnant or breast feeding
- Maintain a healthy balanced diet (vegetables, whole foods, hydration, protein, fibre)

In the end, this is just another example of why its important to consume everything in moderation!
Even “healthy” foods.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A little bit of everything, whole foods, mostly plants, in moderation 😉
