Recently, a saddle mapping was done, which clearly shows saddle bridging.
In this single frame, the horse was in the middle of a left hand turn.

Oddly enough, horses often hollow their backs to avoid the discomfort, increasing the bridge degree & adding to the extreme pressure on the loins and scapula.

This chart offers a rough estimate of saddle seat sizing, however, build of the rider, build of the horse, style of riding and personal preference all play a part in the final decision.

Western Saddle rigging locations. Though many saddle styles have rigging position based on the style, the rigging position should be based on the saddle fit to the horse.

In our workshop we can often work with your favorite saddle to achieve a better fit for your horse without having to shop for a new saddle.
The process of re-contouring a saddle starts with mapping which reveals a saddle tree with a too-shallow recess for the stirrup leathers where they run over the bars of the tree.
The padding under the saddle can usually take up slight contact imperfections.
In this instance, the allowance was present on the tree in front of and behind the high point of the stirrup leathers to build up and re-contour for a tapered transition and softening of the high points.
