🌊 Swimming with Purpose: Bill Elgie Making Waves for Hospice Care 💙
Some people swim for fitness. Others swim for focus.
And some, like Bill Elgie, swim with purpose, heart, and deep gratitude.
At 62, Bill is a semi-retired teacher, outdoor educator, and lifelong swimmer who now calls Tay Valley Township home with his wife, Leslie. A passionate canoe tripper and early-morning swimmer, Bill has spent decades in the water but this year, every stroke carries a much deeper meaning.
Bill joined WAVES for Hospice because it felt like a natural fit, he already swims three times a week (often more!). But what truly drives him is something far more personal.
In 2024, Bill and his wife experienced the loss of Leslie’s parents. In their final days, both were able to receive care at Ian Anderson House Hospice in Oakville. That experience left a lasting impact.
Bill shares that hospice was “such a blessing… for them, and for us as caregivers.”
In a time filled with uncertainty and emotion, hospice provided calm, compassion, and dignity. It allowed their family to shift focus from caregiving stress to simply being present with loved ones.
That’s why Bill is swimming.
Because hospice care matters not just for those at the end of life, but for every family walking alongside them.
💙 “Hospice programs give people valuable support and help ease the load of caregiving, so we can focus more on being present in their final days.”
And Bill has truly gone above and beyond for this cause.
What started as a 50 km goal quickly turned into 100 km and he’s already surpassed it with an incredible 118 km swum during the campaign! WOW!
Whether he’s powering through early morning laps or reflecting quietly in the water, Bill knows every stroke is making a difference.
💬 “It makes me feel good to know that my swimming can help support families in need.”
🌊 GOOD NEWS! We’re extending WAVES for Hospice until Friday, April 3rd! 🌊
