Menopause is experienced by 100 percent of women, and its symptoms have a profound impact on their wellbeing, quality of life and careers. In fact, according to the Menopause Foundation of Canada, one in ten women may leave the workforce due to unmanaged symptoms of menopause.

The SOGC welcomes today’s announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove broad ‘black box’ warnings from MHT products for menopause treatment and hopes that this step will further encourage women to explore MHT as a potential treatment option based on consultation with their physician.

Ahead of International Safe Abortion Day, the SOGC reminds legislators and policy leaders across the country that access to abortion is a right that must be protected.

While Canada remains a beacon of light in the world when it comes to accessing reproductive health care, global challenges remain. In many parts of the world, access to safe abortion remains severely restricted or banned outright. This leads to unsafe procedures in secret that endanger women’s lives and, in many cases, to preventable deaths.

Today and every day, the SOGC upholds its unwavering support for safe, legal and accessible abortion services everywhere. In the face of uncertainty on these rights internationally, our position will never change.

Informed choice is foundational to midwifery care.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) has reaffirmed its position: acetaminophen remains a first-line option for pain and fever during pregnancy when used as recommended. Health Canada also maintains there is no conclusive evidence linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Midwives support clients with evidence-based information to guide decision-making. If you have questions or concerns about using acetaminophen in pregnancy, talk to your midwife or other health-care provider.

We are pleased to share that today the Government announced proposed changes to expand scope of practice for physiotherapists. For physiotherapists, proposed scope expansion enables ordering of diagnostic imaging further enabling our ability to diagnose. OPA has long advocated for these changes so that people in Ontario have timely access to care. We are pleased to see this progress and OPA is committed to continue to advocate to take scope expansion across the finish line.

The government has recognized that scope expansion provides more timely access to care for people when they need it most. Supporting and enabling physiotherapists to work to the full extent of their training and expertise will further contribute to the optimal use of Ontario’s health human resources. The regulation changes for physiotherapists are straightforward and within the Ministry’s authority undercurrent legislation, and we look forward to working with the Government to complete this important work during this fall. 💜 “The simple act of caring is heroic.” – Edward Albert

Edward Albert, an actor and advocate, often spoke about the quiet power of compassion. His words remind us that heroism isn’t always found in grand gestures — sometimes it’s in the everyday acts of empathy, presence, and care that make the greatest difference.

At Pelvic Health Solutions, this is the foundation of both healing and professional practice.

SOGC member Dr. Stephanie Rhone was featured on Global News Morning B.C. this past weekend, discussing the challenges women face in navigating menopause and perimenopause.

As a gynaecologist at B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, Dr. Rhone emphasizes the lack of research in this area and in many other aspects of women’s health: “There’s so much that we don’t know, and it often is a challenge.”
