Happy International Women’s Day from the Home Care Workers Co-operative 💜

HCWC is a woman-owned and operated cooperative, and that means something to us every single day.

Care work has always been carried by women — often quietly, often invisibly, and far too often without the respect or pay it deserves. Our cooperative was created to change that. When women come together collectively, support each other, and share ownership in their work, we build something powerful.

At HCWC we celebrate each other daily. We support one another through hard shifts and long days. We create space where workers feel respected, cared for, and empowered. We make sure the people providing care are treated with the same dignity and compassion they give to others.

This is what happens when women lead.
This is what happens when workers stand together.

Today we celebrate the caregivers, the advocates, the daughters, the mothers, the sisters, the leaders — and every woman who continues pushing for a more just and caring world.

WOW!!! I'm thrilled to share this with you all!

I’ve been nominated for the Peterbrough Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce Luminary Awards for Women in Business for the second year in a row.

This year, in the Building Belonging and Trailblazer categories. To be recognized again feels incredibly meaningful.

Thank you to the person/people who nominated me. That kind of support matters more than people realise.

When I think about why this nomination means so much, I always come back to the same thing. This work has always been about women.

Home care is built on the labour of women. And yet in traditional for profit models, PSWs are often underpaid, undervalued, and shut out of leadership. They are expected to do the work, not shape the system. That never sat right with me.

So instead of accepting that reality, I built something different.

As Founder and Executive Director of Home Care Workers Cooperative, Canada’s first woman-owned non-profit home care worker co op, I have had the privilege of watching PSWs step into ownership, governance, budgets, and real decision making. The talent and skill was always there. The leadership was always there. What was missing was the opportunity and the structure to support it.

That is what Building Belonging means to me. And that is what Trailblazing looks like in this sector.

HCWC works because of the women who run it. This nomination belongs to them.

We need more women building, more women leading, and more women lifting each other up instead of competing.

We are at the Living Well seniors Showcase today . There are lots of great booths, and info sessions for all things Senior. Come out and say hi and cool off in the air conditioning. PTBO wellness center until 4 pm.

The City of Peterborough is offering a range of adult leisure programs at the McDonnel Street Community Centre at 577 McDonnel St.

Residents can join a free fitness class, drop in for a game of shuffleboard or sign up for a more structured, long-running program.

Drop-in sessions

Drop-in sessions cost $3.50 per person per visit. Please bring exact cash. Participants are asked to bring clean, indoor shoes to wear inside the facility.

Drop-in sessions include the following:

• Short Mat Bowling on Mondays and Fridays. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., play begins at 1 p.m. This drop-in play ends May 16.

• Shuffleboard on Tuesdays. Doors open at 9 a.m., play begins at 9:30 a.m.

• Darts on Thursdays. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., play begins at 1 p.m. This drop-in activity ends May 8.
