Thank you to Amy Di Marino for her thoughtful reflection on Dr Taryn Grieder’s Micro Credential Neurobiology of the Helping Profession + Neuroscience of Addiction

How does health counselling change the brain? This Trent Micro-credential course explores the neurobiological basis of common psychological disorders, with a focus on addictions, and examines how health counselling can reshape brain function.

Students will gain an understanding of key brain structures, neurotransmitters, and neural circuits involved in depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and the various types of addictions. This course integrates cutting-edge neuroscience research, brain imaging studies, and real-world clinical applications to show how health counselling influences neuroplasticity, cognition, and emotional regulation.

This course bridges neuroscience and clinical practice, offering a deeper appreciation of how health counselling can literally rewire the brain.

Ever notice how your brain runs on autopilot?
Same route to work. Same morning routine. Same thoughts, same reactions.

Our brains love patterns but those patterns can also keep us stuck.

One simple way to support neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to rewire and grow) is to change up your routine.
Take a different road.
Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand.
Try a new workout.
Listen to a different genre of music.
Start your day in a new order.

These small shifts activate new neural pathways and signal to your brain:
“We’re learning. We’re adapting. We’re growing.”

In Neural Network Therapy®, we use practical, everyday strategies like this to help retrain the brain, reduce emotional overload, and build healthier thought and behaviour patterns.

Your brain is not fixed.
It is trainable, adaptable, and capable of change at any age.

Changing Perspectives on Men’s Mental Health
Sometimes the story we tell about our struggles sounds like failure when it is actually proof of courage.

In men’s mental health, perspective and language matter more than we realise. One man described a dark chapter of his life as weakness, but when we looked closer, it was resilience, self-awareness, and a brave decision to seek support.

When we shift the narrative, we shift the healing.

At Canadian Family Health Counselling, we focus on giving clients real-life tools, not just insight. Approaches like Neural Network Therapy help people navigate present-day challenges while gently unpacking past trauma, so healing becomes practical, grounded, and sustainable.

Strength is not the absence of struggle. It is the willingness to face it.
