September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day ๐งก
This day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
September 30th also commemorates Orange Shirt Day, which is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of โEvery Child Mattersโ.
The visuals bring together symbols of the 3 Indigenous groups across Canada with imagery representing Truth and Reconciliation:
๐งก The eagle for First Nations
๐งก The narwhal for Inuit
๐งก The beaded flower for the Mรฉtis
๐งก The circle symbolizes unity and the spirit of reconciliation
๐งก The pathway represents the reconciliation journey
๐งก The stars symbolize the children who never returned home from residential schools
๐งก Orange represents truth-telling and healing
We encourage visitors to take a moment to reflect and learn more about National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, First Nations, Inuit and Metis, both within our region and across Canada, and what can be done everyday to support Indigenous peoples and reconciliation.
Today and always, visit respectfully and thoughtfully ๐งก
