Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting over 50 million people worldwide 🌍 (WHO, 2022). It is characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by abnormal brain activity. Despite its prevalence, epilepsy remains widely misunderstood, leading to stigma and discrimination.

🔹 Key Facts About Epilepsy:
✅ Not all seizures are the same – Types range from focal (partial) to generalized seizures (Fisher et al., 2017).
✅ Epilepsy is not contagious – It results from factors like genetic influences, brain injury, infections, or unknown causes (Thijs et al., 2019).
✅ Treatment options exist – While there is no cure, anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), surgery, ketogenic diets, and neuromodulation therapies help manage symptoms (Kwan et al., 2020).
✅ Triggers vary – Stress, lack of sleep, flashing lights, or alcohol can provoke seizures in some individuals.

🔹 Why Awareness Matters:
🚨 Misconceptions lead to social isolation – Many people with epilepsy face job discrimination, educational barriers, and social stigma (Jacoby et al., 2015).
💡 Seizure first aid is crucial – Simple steps like staying calm, timing the seizure, and ensuring safety can make a difference in an emergency (Epilepsy Foundation, 2023).
