✨ Staff Spotlight: Lauren Markos, B.A.H., MSW, RSW ✨

As we continue celebrating 10 years of Southwest Counselling Services, we’re highlighting the incredible people who bring care, compassion, and expertise to our community.

This week’s spotlight shines on Lauren Markos — a dedicated clinician whose human rights and trauma-informed approach creates a safe and empowering space for clients of all ages. Lauren works with individuals, couples, and families, drawing on her training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, mindfulness, and self-compassion to guide meaningful change.

Her passion for solution-focused and trauma-specific therapy reflects her deep commitment to helping clients navigate life’s challenges — from grief and loss to anxiety, depression, and relationship stress. Lauren’s warmth, professionalism, and dedication to human dignity embody the very heart of our mission at Southwest Counselling Services. 💛

Story #3 of "10 Stories in 10 Weeks" in celebration of our 10th Anniversary: Walking With Grief

Over the years, one of our most meaningful community programs has been Walking With Grief — a simple yet powerful idea that brought people together to heal while moving forward, one step at a time. What began as a short-term walking group soon grew into an ongoing space for connection, reflection, and shared strength. 💙

Programs like this remind us why we do what we do — helping our community find comfort, hope, and companionship through life’s hardest moments.

✨ Staff Spotlight: Michele McPherson ✨

As we celebrate 10 years of Southwest Counselling Services, we’re taking time to highlight the incredible people who make our work possible.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Michele McPherson — our first ever MSW student and associate therapist. Michele is a compassionate and creative clinician who brings a mind-body approach to therapy. Michele works with individuals, couples, and families, and is especially well known for her guided breathwork and movement workshops in group settings. Her ability to help clients connect physical movement with emotional well-being is something truly special and she has championed our vision and mission since her start with us in 2018.

We’re so grateful to have Michele on our team and to celebrate the impact she continues to make in our community. 💛

🎉 We’re celebrating 10 years of making big impacts! As part of our “10 Stories in 10 Weeks” series, here’s one of our favourites: our “Spin It Out” initiative.

🚴‍♂️ What is it? We partnered with local youth and Ironworks Health and Wellness in 2017, giving teens a free cycling-based program to build both physical strength and mental resilience. Research shows that raising the heart rate releases chemicals like serotonin which improve concentration, focus —and can help prevent deeper mental-health struggles.

🧠 Led by our team, the sessions combined exercise with psycho-education, giving young people practical skills to recognise symptoms and proactively cope. This was our first community initiative combining both the mind and body to help people build coping strategies outside of the traditional talk-therapy environment.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come…and we’re only just getting started.

👉 Stay tuned each week for another story from the last decade.

🌟 As part of our 10th anniversary celebration, we’re honouring the people at the heart of SWC—our team. Today we celebrate Kristen Freitas, our Office Manager and the backbone of our practice.

Since day one, Kristen has been a steady, compassionate presence—quietly keeping things moving, welcoming every client with care, and supporting our clinicians so they can do their best work. A Lambton College (2018) Office Administrative – Health Services grad with experience in the medical field and childhood studies, Kristen brings equal parts professionalism and heart. We are deeply grateful for your dedication, Kristen—you’ve helped shape who we are since you joined our team in 2018. ❤️

🎉 We’re celebrating 10 years in Sarnia-Lambton with 10 weeks of 10 stories—a weekly look back at the moments, programs, and partnerships that shaped Southwest Counselling Services. From grief walking groups and trauma therapy to mental performance consulting and group therapy, we’re proud of this journey—and the people who made it possible.

To start, here’s the very first article about our practice from The Sarnia Journal in 2016 (Link in comments) as well as an interview on the 'Social Work Spotlight' Podcast highlighting the origins of Southwest Counselling Services.
