As we continue our 10-year anniversary journey, we want to pause and honour the three people who planted the seeds of Southwest Counselling Services.

Dawn Whalls, Matt Barnes, and Taryn Barnes dreamed of a space where compassion, curiosity, and deep respect for people’s stories would shape mental health care — and ten years later, that vision is still guiding us every day.

✨ Dawn brought decades of wisdom long before SWC began. Her steady presence, commitment to evidence-based care, and role as a mentor and EMDR consultant have helped shape not just a practice, but a community built on trust and connection.

✨ Matt has weaved psychology, performance mindset, and emotional depth into the fabric of our work — always reminding us that healing is both grounded in science and lived in relationship. His passion for sport, resilience, and human potential has inspired so many.

✨ Taryn brings creativity and courage to her practice, helping individuals and families find language for experience and strength in connection. Her blend of insight, empathy, and innovative tools has shaped so much of the heart-work we do.

Together, they didn’t just open a clinic — they fostered a caring, curious, and courageous community dedicated to growth, dignity, and wellbeing. We’re grateful for their leadership, their humanity, and the culture they built that continues to serve families, youth, and individuals across Southwestern Ontario. 💛

🎉 Story #9 – Finding Calm Through Yoga & Breathwork 🧘‍♀️🌿

Over the past 10 years, one thing we’ve learned again and again is this: healing doesn’t live only in our thoughts — it lives in the body, too.

At Southwest Counselling Services, practices like yoga, breathwork, and movement-based therapy have become a meaningful part of how we support nervous system regulation, emotional wellbeing, and reconnection — especially for those navigating anxiety, depression, grief, stress, and burnout.

Through offerings like Mind Body Therapy, meditation pods, and group programs led by Michele McPherson, clients are invited to slow down, breathe, move, and listen to what their bodies are telling them — often discovering a sense of calm and clarity they didn’t know was possible.

✨ Coming up:
Michele is leading her next Basics of Breathwork group — a 4-week series focused on regulating the nervous system, increasing heart rate variability, and gently shifting out of fight-or-flight.

🗓 Starts Wednesday, January 7th
🧘‍♀️ Facilitated by Michele McPherson, RSW & Certified Yoga Teacher

If you’re curious or would like to sign up, DM us or email michele@swcounselling.ca to learn more.

As we celebrate 10 years, we’re grateful for the many ways we’ve been able to help people reconnect — not just with their minds, but with their bodies and their breath.

💛 Celebrating Carlyn McNally, MSW, RSW

As we continue honouring the incredible people who make up Southwest Counselling Services during our 10-year anniversary, today we’re recognizing Carlyn McNally — a clinician whose warmth, curiosity, and belief in human connection shine through everything she does.

Carlyn brings a gentle confidence to her work, grounded in the understanding that every person has the ability to grow when they feel truly seen and supported. Whether she’s working with children, teens, or adults, she creates spaces where clients can explore their stories safely and at their own pace.

She has a special passion for group therapy, where she helps people notice patterns, build relational awareness, and experience the kind of healing that can only happen in community. Her approach reminds us that we don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone — connection can be a powerful catalyst for change.

We are so grateful for the heart, intention, and dedication Carlyn brings to our team and to the clients she walks alongside. 💛

🌊 Story #8: Making a Splash for Change — Our Annual Polar Bear Dip

As we celebrate 10 years of supporting mental health and wellness in our community, one tradition we love to reflect on is our annual Polar Bear Dip — a chilly, courageous plunge taken each New Year’s Day. Over the years, clients, staff, friends, and neighbours have gathered by the lake to brave the cold in support of meaningful local causes.

In our 3rd Annual Dip, with the help of the Sarnia Cold Plunge Community we saw record participation and raised $2,250 for local addiction services through Bluewater Health Foundation — a powerful reminder of what’s possible when community comes together.

As we look ahead, we’re proud to pass the torch to the Sarnia Cold Plunge Community, who will be hosting the 4th Annual Polar Bear Dip on January 1, 2026, carrying this tradition forward and continuing the ripple effect of connection, resilience, and hope.

We’re grateful to everyone who has taken the plunge with us over the years and excited to cheer on this next chapter. ❄️💙

As we continue our 10-year anniversary celebration, today we’re shining a light on one of the bright, compassionate forces on our team — Cami Sinclair, BSW, MSW, RSW.

Cami brings a rare blend of heart, grit, and lived experience to her work. With both her BSW and MSW and experience across children’s mental health, youth development, long-term care, and adult support, Cami brings a thoughtful, grounded presence to every client she works with. Her ability to meet people of all ages with warmth and understanding makes her an invaluable part of our team.

Cami also brings a unique perspective from her years as a high-level athlete — playing NCAA Division I softball and representing Team Ontario Women’s Softball. She now uses that lived experience to support clients navigating the emotional and mental demands that come with sport, performance, and life transitions.

We’re grateful for the heart, empathy, fun and strength Cami brings to Southwest Counselling Services each day. 💙

🎉 Story #7 – Healing Through Play & Sound 🧸🎶

For 10 years, Southwest Counselling Services has believed in meeting children and youth where they are — and sometimes, that means beginning with play, creativity, movement, or gentle sound rather than words.

Our Play Therapy and Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) services have become a meaningful part of our work with families. We’ve seen children open up in the safety of a sandtray, express big feelings through art and imagination, and find calm and connection through the supportive rhythms of SSP. These approaches have helped countless young people in our community feel understood, regulated, and more confident in themselves.

We’re honoured to walk alongside families through these moments — supporting them, celebrating progress, and offering approaches that help each child feel safe, seen, and supported in their own unique way. 💛

💛 Celebrating Rachael Fowler, BSW, MSW, RSW

As we continue sharing the stories behind our Southwest Counselling Services team, today we’re honoured to highlight Rachael Fowler, who supports clients out of our Tillsonburg location.

Rachael brings a deeply empathetic, grounded, and non-judgmental presence to her work — the kind of presence that helps people exhale and feel safe enough to start exploring the harder parts of their story. Her practice blends evidence-based approaches with genuine connection, empowering youth and adults to understand themselves, reclaim their voice, and move toward healing at their own pace.

Rachael has extensive experience supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and those navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, body image, relationships, and major life transitions. She has a gift for helping clients understand their brain and nervous system in a way that makes everything feel less overwhelming and more manageable — because when people have the language to understand what’s happening inside them, they gain power over their own wellness.

We’re grateful for the compassion, clarity, and wisdom she brings to our team — and to every person she works with. 💛

🎉 Story #6 – Breaking Barriers in Junior Hockey 🏒

Over the past 10 years, one of the most meaningful parts of our work at Southwest Counselling Services has been supporting athletes and performers — especially through our connection with the Sarnia Sting and local sports associations. What began as simple conversations about athlete mental health, mindset and focus has grown into a deeper commitment to helping young athletes navigate pressure, identity, and the emotional highs and lows of the game.

Through team sessions, locker-room talks, and ongoing mental-performance support, we’ve watched players open up, build confidence, and learn skills that serve them far beyond the rink. It’s been a privilege to be welcomed into their world and to help break down the barriers around mental health in sport.

Here’s to the athletes and teams who’ve trusted us with their stories — we’re grateful to be part of your journey. 💛
