Winter Solstice ❄️ | McKinney Psychology
Today we honor the Winter Solstice — the shortest day and longest night of the year. As daylight begins its slow return, we’re reminded that even in the darkest seasons, light is growing.

In therapy and in life, growth isn’t always visible. Sometimes it’s quiet, subtle, and happening beneath the surface — just like the earth resting in winter.

If you’ve been feeling tired, overwhelmed, or stuck, you’re not alone. This season invites rest, reflection, and compassionate care for yourself. Healing isn’t linear; it’s seasonal.

From all of us at McKinney Psychology, may you find peace in the pause, strength in the stillness, and hope in the returning light. 🌟

🌿 Grateful Moment
A huge thank-you to the MESC Health & Wellness Team for inviting me to speak with your staff today about Vicarious Trauma.

The group showed up with heart. They shared openly, reflected deeply, and reminded me why this work matters so much.

I genuinely love teaching—especially when I get to spend time with people who support kids and communities the way you do. 💚

Thank you for the trust, the conversation, and the courage in the room today.

🌿 Why Maslow’s Hierarchy Matters in Trauma Therapy

When we talk about healing trauma, we often start near the base of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs — safety. Before your mind can process painful experiences, your body and nervous system need to know: "I’m safe now".

That’s why therapy begins with creating a sense of security — both in your life and in the counselling space itself. You can’t heal if you’re still in danger, or if your environment feels unpredictable.

At McKinney Psychology, we spend intentional time helping clients feel grounded, safe, and in control of the process. Whether that means setting clear boundaries, using grounding techniques, or simply making the room feel comfortable — safety always comes first.

Healing doesn’t begin when you talk about the trauma. It begins when your body believes you’re no longer living it. 💛
