So many people resolve to change their eating habits as a new year's resolution, and so many people abandon that plan....two months later. Or less.
For many, the vow is based on for weight loss. But what if I propose you eat more instead? Not in terms of intake, but variety. The challenge might even have you losing weight along the way, as you focus on the adventure of trying new vegetables.
Some patients can't believe it when I tell them that I want them to eat 30 different plant foods a week. But it's easy when you start bringing in different varieties. Instead of just eating rice and wheat pasta, why not try buckwheat or quinoa?
If you're afraid to add new things (or you're afraid of complaints from your kids) - why not try adding something familiar but different? If you already like spinach, why not give another leafy vegetable a chance, like swiss chard or kale? If you already like berries, why not try blackberries alongside your raspberries? Experimenting with variety can begin to open your palette and also your body will benefit from the many vitamins in different plants.
One effective approach is to shop the periphery of the grocery store, spending more time in the fresh aisle than in the aisle with canned goods. If you're on a budget, keep an eye out for specials and add a new veggie to your list at that time, or look out for what's in season.
Quick challenge - count up the number of vegetables you eat regularly, and then see if you can double that number by the end of the month! It's a way of exploring food that will boost your enthusiasm for eating, and your body will benefit from the variety.
