Alberni Lifeline

Alberni Lifeline Alberni Lifeline is 'Your Local Personal Emergency Response Service'.

In 1987, the administration at WCGH brought the idea of Lifeline’s Medical Alert Service to the Alberni Valley. Sharon Fedirchuk was contact by a friend working as a nurse in the ER at WCGH and asked if she would be interested in volunteering her time to set up and coordinate the Lifeline program. Sharon felt it was a very worthwhile service and she installed the first unit in the Port Alberni on March 29, 1988. Sharon continued to volunteer in the role of coordinator for the Alberni Lifeline Program until late in 1989/early 1990. At that time, she handed over the coordinator role to one of her dedicated volunteers, Leroy Loewen. When Sharon retired in 2000 once again she offered her time as a volunteer for Alberni Lifeline. Over the years Alberni Lifeline has continued to grow in Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield. Eventually ownership and operations of Alberni Lifeline was given over to the West Coast General Hospital Foundation and the profits generated by the program are donated into the Foundation. WCGH Foundation uses the funds generated to purchase new medical equipment, improve services and assist with funding for projects inside WCGH.

One correction is the landline HomeSafe Standard is $38.00 a month, not $35 as outlined in the story. Still a great deal for a month to month service with no contract or taxes! We hope to hear from you or a loved one :)

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are deeply saddened to share the passing of longtime Bulldogs broadcaster and cherished member of our organization, Evan Hammond.

For many years, Evan was the voice of Bulldogs hockey and an integral part of our team. Through countless broadcasts, unforgettable moments, and seasons of triumph and challenge, Evan brought the Bulldogs to life for our fans and families around the world.

His passion, professionalism, and unmistakable presence helped shape the identity of our organization and connected generations of supporters to our game and to our community.

Evan’s impact extended far beyond the broadcast booth. He was a trusted colleague, a mentor, and a friend—someone who genuinely cared about the players, the staff, and the Alberni Valley. His dedication to the Bulldogs and his love for the game leaves a lasting mark that will never be forgotten and is second only to the love he had for his children and family.

Our hearts are with Evan’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We are grateful for everything Evan gave to this organization and to the community he served so faithfully.

Evan’s passion and love for Bulldogs hockey will live on in every story shared, every memory made, and in the heart of our community forever.

The Bulldogs organization stands together in mourning and remembrance, united in gratitude for Evan’s life and the legacy he leaves behind.
