Night-time anxiety hits differently 🌙

Why is it that the moment your head hits the pillow, every worry suddenly feels louder?

At night, there are fewer distractions, so your mind finally has space to ruminate, replay conversations, and imagine everything that could go wrong tomorrow.

Suddenly, things that felt manageable in the day can feel overwhelming.

And then comes the vicious cycle:
The more you try to force sleep, the more awake you feel.

If this feels familiar, please know you’re not alone 🤍

.mentalhealth April is Stress Awareness Month, and it is a reminder that your body and mind are constantly communicating with you. Stress is not just pressure, it is a signal. Instead of ignoring it, you can begin noticing where it lives in your body, how it shows up, and what it may be asking for with curiosity.

Many people try to override stress by pushing harder, but this often deepens nervous system fatigue. Your system is not failing you, it is trying to protect you. Slowing down, even briefly, can help regulate your breathing, thoughts, and emotional intensity in meaningful ways.

You can start small by creating moments of safety during your day. This could be stepping outside, loosening your jaw, or taking a few deeper breaths. These simple actions tell your nervous system that you are not in danger anymore.

Being a therapist is so much more than the 60 mins you’re sat with us 🫶

There’s so much thought, reflection and care that happens behind the scenes.

I don’t just “switch off” when a session ends.

I’m thinking about my clients when I’m reading, learning, reflecting.

I’m holding them in mind between sessions and wondering…

✨ Did they manage to set that boundary with their boss?

✨ How are they coping with the toxic family get-together?

✨ Did that new sleep technique help?

And i can’t count the amount of times I’ve felt like the “this would be perfect for ___” when I read a book, hear a song or scroll the gram for mental health stuff!

We carry your stories with us, we feel protective of you, we’re inspired by your bravery. 💛

🧊 Cold Exposure for a Nervous System Reset

When the nervous system is overwhelmed, simple cold stimulation can help bring the body back into balance. Cold activates the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic nervous system, helping shift the body from fight-or-flight into rest-and-restore.

Here are four simple techniques you can try:

❄️ Ice Face Dunk
Dip your face in a bowl of cold water with ice for 10–20 seconds, repeating 3–5 times. This activates the mammalian dive reflex and can quickly calm the heart rate.

❄️ Ice Pack on Chest
Place a cold pack on the sternum (centre of the chest) and breathe slowly for 2–3 minutes. Try inhaling for 4 seconds and exhaling for 6 seconds to deepen relaxation.

❄️ Ice in Hands
Hold an ice cube in each hand and focus on the sensation for 30–60 seconds. This grounding technique can interrupt anxious thoughts and bring attention back to the body.

❄️ Cold Pack on Neck
Place a cold pack on the back of the neck for 2–5 minutes while breathing slowly. This can help regulate the autonomic nervous system.

Small practices like these can support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and trauma recovery.

⏰ SPRINGING FORWARD FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ⏰

✅ Shift bedtime gradually. Starting on Wednesday, move bedtime up (and wakeup) 15 minutes earlier. This will slowly ease your body into your new sleep routine.

✅ Change clocks on Saturday night. Don’t wait until Sunday. Waking up to the right time helps you mentally adjust faster.

✅ Increase morning light exposure. Open curtains in the morning or sit outside to help reset your internal clock.

✅ Utilize the extra daylight. Play outside or go for a short walk before bed to burn off energy and encourage better sleep.

✅ Spend extra time prepping for the week ahead. To help ease in, spend time on Sunday meal prepping, laying out clothes, packing lunches, etc.
