Our communities are carrying a great deal of heartache following this week’s tragedy impacting John Diefenbaker Senior School. Many families are navigating conversations with children and youth who are grieving.
As a school board, we want to acknowledge the weight of this moment and offer a few gentle supports that can help at home.
When children are grieving, they often look to the adults in their lives for steadiness, honesty, and connection. Here are a few reminders that can make a meaningful difference right now.
• Speak openly in simple, clear language. Children take their cues from us, and honesty builds safety.
• Listen more than you think you need to. Sometimes the most healing thing is knowing that someone truly hears them.
• There is no one way to grieve. Some children talk, others withdraw, and there are those who show their feelings through movement, play, or big emotions. All of it is okay.
• Keep routines in place where you can. Predictability helps children feel safe when their world feels shaken.
• Remember together. Saying the person’s name or sharing memories invites children to open up on their own time.
• Reach out for help if you are worried. Asking for support is a strength, not a failure.
Most of all, take care of yourself. Grieving alongside children is heavy work, and the community’s well-being begins with the well-being of its adults.
If you or your child needs support, please reach out to your BWDSB school or local community agencies. Some helpful resources are listed below. We are here to walk beside you.
