Our 2025 Population Health Status Report takes a closer look at how people across our region are doing, highlighting real progress, and where more support is still needed.

Here’s some good news for children and youth:
- Child and youth poverty dropped by 41% between 2016 and 2021
- Immunization rates now exceed the provincial average
- Substance use and self-harm among youth are declining

These improvements show that progress is possible when communities work together, but there’s still more to do to ensure everyone has the opportunity for good health.

Enjoy your Halloween treats and keep your smile healthy too!

Here’s how:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Spit, don’t rinse. After brushing, spit out the toothpaste but wait 10 to 30 minutes before rinsing, so the fluoride can keep working.
- Have treats with meals. Eating sweets as part of a meal is better than snacking all day. Teeth need breaks to recover.
- Drink plain water after eating. It helps rinse away sugar and acid.

For Jennifer Vass, RN(c) in Kyuquot, the appeal of working as a Remote Certified Nurse was the unique lifestyle it offers. Remote certification, provided by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, equips registered nurses with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to deliver safe, evidence-based care tailored to the distinct needs of rural and remote communities.

Many nurses are drawn to the slower pace of life found in rural and remote regions on Vancouver Island where they find communities that offer a strong sense of connection, meaningful work and closer ties to nature.

• Hands-on activities like art and gardening
• Nutritious meals and snacks
• Light assistance with care

Who’s it for?
Adults who want to stay active and connected and caregivers who appreciate knowing their loved one is safe, supported, and having a good time.
