there are many valid reasons someone may feel like they can't do a pose
and that deserves to be respected, always
but often, that feeling is shaped by quiet beliefs we don't even realize we're carrying: that our body should look like someone else's, that there's a "correct" way to align, that some versions are superior, or that what we can do simply isn't enough
these beliefs can create distance between us and our own experience
as a teacher, part of the role is to gently bring awareness to this
to shift the focus away from comparison and toward curiosity, compassion, and connection
that's why I often respond with:
"i'd love to know the aspect of this pose you're struggling with right now"
because the goal isn't to achieve a perfect shape
it's to meet yourself where you are
we are all perfect in our own beautifully unique ways
and our practice should honour that
"meet you on the mat"
