Listening fatigue is a common experience for people with hearing loss and happens when the brain becomes overworked from straining to hear. This is especially true when in noisy environments. Turning down background noise like music or the TV and providing breaks when necessary can help reduce the impact of listening fatigue.

Successful communication requires the effort of both the speaker and listener. Expressing information in another way may be beneficial to the individual with a hearing loss.

Rather than repeating the same phrase, try to find another way of saying the same thing or even write it down. For example, writing down important instructions for taking medication or using gestures and facial expressions to help clarify the meaning of a message.

You can also ask how you can help to improve the communication process overall.

Day 3 of supporting those with hearing loss to participate in conversations💬An important thing to consider is using clear language and speaking normally (not too fast or too slow). Speech is difficult to understand with a hearing loss and may even become distorted if rushed or slowed down.

Asking questions like “is everyone clear on this?” allows for the opportunity to reiterate key points or instructions.
