Have you been told recently that “in order to receive this drug, you must use a specific pharmacy”?

Most often it involves what are referred to as “specialty drugs”. You should know that the only thing “special” about them is their higher cost. Most pharmacies, including Pharmacy Associates of Port Perry, are qualified, equipped and prepared to handle these and all other medications. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something. 😉

More and more insurance companies are encouraging, or in some cases, forcing patients to use corporate or “mail order” pharmacies to fill some or all of your prescriptions. Not only are these companies taking away the patient’s right to choose a provider, they fragment care (different medications filled at different pharmacies) and potentially reduce access by compelling you to use a pharmacy that may require significant travel to attend.

Additionally, insurance companies are starting to “vertically integrate”, opening pharmacies themselves, creating a potential conflict of interest.

None of this is in the patient’s interest and can potentially complicate care when providers don’t know who’s taking what.

You have the right to choose your pharmacy provider.

We feel strongly that patient autonomy is paramount.

Since 2023, our pharmacists have been assessing and precribing for 19 common conditions that historically have required a visit to the doctor's office, urgent care or emergency department. Across the province, pharmacists have provided more than 2 million consultations for aliments such as Urinary tract infections, pink eye, cold sores, thrush, and dermatitis (rashes), taking the burden off of physicians and freeing them up to see more complex and serious issues.

Meet Anchanah Jeyamohan! 👋 We’re delighted to welcome her to our team!

Anchanah is a University of Waterloo Doctorate of Pharmacy student joining us for her first of 3 clinical rotations, where she’ll be with us until the end of March.

Originally from Ajax, Anchanah brings her undergraduate education in Honours Science and 4 years of Pharmacy Education to the capstone of her training as a pharmacy professional.

Clinical rotations are the final step for Anchanah’s journey before she becomes a practicing licensed pharmacist, and we’re thrilled to be part of this important chapter in her journey.

The small labels you may see on your prescription are called auxiliary labels, and they’re very important!

Not all drugs have a grapefruit interaction.
