New book ‼️ can’t wait to dig into this book by .msrd “Wilson argues that our cultures fixation on thin, white women reinscribes racist ideas about Black women’s bodies and ways of being in the world as too much”. I am feeling this should be required reading for those of us that live in bodies that fit this narrative as we need to be part of breaking down the systems that uphold this fixation.

While clinical supervision and mentoring is common practice in psychotherapy, it is undervalued and underutilized in dietetics. Yet, we believe that dietitians can greatly benefit from this support!

So, what IS supervision? It is a space where dietitians can discuss the challenges they are facing in their practice, explore ethical concerns, receive feedback on their work, and gain new strategies in order to care for themselves AND their clients.

Supervision can be offered individually and in groups. In a typical group session, dietitians discuss case studies, offer mutual compassionate support, and question their biases, all with the guidance and support of experienced facilitators.

Engaging in group supervision can help you tackle imposter syndrome, reduce isolation, and feel more equipped to support your clients!

Are you a dietitian interested in engaging in supervision? Josée Sovinsky, RD, RP and Lori Short-Zamudio, RD (The unapologetically me RD) are offering two groups in the fall, with the first one starting next week! These are open to dietitians worldwide. Want to learn more? Here is the link:

While aiming to "do no harm" is an honourable goal, it's also unrealistic. As dietitians, we will at times unintentionally perpetuate harm. This is inevitable, as we are all flawed humans, and many of us carry layers of privilege that may make us ignorant to certain experiences. We have also been trained in and operate under colonial, capitalistic, and oppressive systems.

While some of this is inevitable, we can commit to examining the areas where we may be doing harm, keep ourselves accountable, and continue to unlearn and challenge these systems.

I'm not interested in being part of a profession that keeps its head in the sand and doesn't see the harm of its ways.

Posted • .counselling There is discomfort in being called in, in being asked to be accountable for harm done, but that discomfort will never compare to the pain experienced by those who have been harmed.⁣

In the last week, we’ve witnessed members of the HAES® community share the harm they’ve experienced at the hands of Lindo Bacon, a well-known author and speaker in the HAES® and fat liberation communities. What we’ve learned from , , and the leadership of , who have courageously shared their experiences with , is that despite multiple attempts to call in Lindo and ask them to recognize the ways they were upholding fat oppression and white supremacist values, Lindo refused to take steps to repair and amend the harm caused. There is now a public demand for accountability, and we have yet to hear from Lindo.⁣

Our team is in solidarity with Mikey, Lindley, ASDAH, and all others who have experienced harm due to the upholding of white supremacy and anti-fat hate within the HAES® community. We also recognize we are not exempt from perpetuating this harm – as a team of white providers who operate in liberatory spaces, we have a lot of work to do. We will continue to hold each other accountable by having difficult conversations, calling each other in, and not allowing our fragility to get in the way of serving those we are trying to serve. Beyond keeping each other accountable, as a corporation, Blossom will be seeking external anti-racism business consultation, and will continue donating funds to organizations that support marginalized communities and liberation efforts, starting with ASDAH. We share this not for applaud, but with the hope that those in our communities will hold us to these promises. ⁣

In solidarity,⁣
The Blossom Counselling Centre Team

Posted • I believe, and stand in solidarity with Mikey Lindley the ASDAH Board and the many people who have been directly or indirectly harmed by the repeated actions of Lindo Bacon.

I am from a profession (Dietetics) which has a long history of harming marginalised people. I also recognise the ways in which I myself have been complicit in harm and the way my privileges have protected me from the harms experienced by others. The experiences they share are not isolated. In the HAES(R) community, particularly those of us with more privileges, we are all complicit in some way. Even if unintentional, impact matters.

The actions I am committed to are: Continued membership with ASDAH (sliding scale, open to all), reinstating my accountability group and expanding my learning and unlearning from circles outside my own

The values I draw upon in these actions are: Integrity, Equity, Transparency, Compassion, Courage

I will look out for in myself: Complacency, defensiveness, perfectionism, performing, people pleasing, avoidance

I will remind myself in the toughest moments: Good person. Lean in. Dig in (repeat). I will not communicate from a place of shame or avoidance. Choose courage.

Please show direct support by contributing to Mikey and Lindley, joining ASDAH and making a firm, ongoing commitment to your own learning. FWIW, I find drawing upon values, knowing what defenses I’m looking out for, and having a reminder in the tougher moments helpful to navigate the inevitable discomfort that comes from deviating from our “business as usual” status quo which as a highly privileged person, is extremely unhelpful in the service of others.

For anyone thinking "eep! What do I do?" I recommend reading post about how to prepare yourself for feedback and highlights for further reading.
