Flock and Forage Farmstead

Flock and Forage Farmstead Just us and our three kids, farming mindfully and sustainably. Raising natural, healthy and happy food. Portage la Prairie, Manitoba

Flock & Forage Farmstead is a young farm focused on permaculture. Located near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Growing free range, pasture raised livestock in a completely chemical free environment. We farm in a manner that makes us feel good about the food we produce, and in a way that benefits both the animals' health and ours as the consumers. All of our animals live outdoors, where they have access to forage based diets most natural to them and ample space to fulfill their instinctual desires.

Hello! Remember us? 😅 It’s been pretty quiet on here as we settle into homeschooling our two oldest and manage treatment for our four year old after his recent diagnosis of Lyme Disease.
However, we want to take a moment to thank all of our new and loyal returning customers this year! We had another sell out year and our five year old still beams when he talks about selling and delivering his own first flock of chickens ☺️ Special thanks to all who made that such an awesome experience for him!

Hello! 👋🏼
Yes, we’re still here!
I honestly thought we’d be quite “active” via our social media this summer because the kids keep us close to home.... but 4 kids, ages 1-5 is no joke! We’re so busy, so I do apologize for not getting to share more of our fun in real time this summer so far!
However - two posts back on our farm Instagram, I mentioned our 5 year old had insisted on raising his own chicks this year.. Well he’s happy to share with you all that tomorrow is processing day!
He has thoroughly enjoyed raising his birds. Checking on them multiple times per day, eager to clean the brooder and bring them whatever they need. He was very proud, having zero losses through the delicate brooding phase, but then he sadly lost two to a suspected fox while on pasture. 🦊 All good lessons learned. I already know this won’t be his last time bringing up some wonderful livestock.

If you’d like to put some amazing, farm fresh whole chickens in your freezer before fall please message us!

These chickens are happy and healthy, very active, beautifully muscled, rotated on chemical free pasture. They enjoy taking dust baths (a fav chicken thing to do) and chasing all the bugs (they’re totally loving the grasshoppers right now).

They come perfectly packaged, freezer/oven ready and fit seamlessly into a slow cooker or instant pot!
Blye will happily deliver in Portage la Prairie or be available to those who would like to pick up on farm.

A huge thank you to our returning customers who continue to show their support for locally raised food! 🐓🌾

We are on our way to drop off eggs today and I needed an extra dozen.. so out to the hen house we went! Straight from nest, to carton, to customer. That’s for you!
We don’t wash to preserve the bloom on the egg, which keeps the eggs fresh much longer, and removes the need to refrigerate them. 🐓 🥚 🍳

A few last egg deliveries going out today just in time for Christmas!
And we wrapped up some big surprises for them - some samples of our super giant eggs we don’t sell because they don’t physically fit into any egg carton we’ve ever come across 😄

Merry Christmas everyone!
A huge Thank-You once again to all of our amazingly supportive customers for making 2018 another sell-out season! Our biggest appreciation to all of our egg customers for sticking out that egg drought with us this fall 😊
We absolutely love hearing all the stories of people from our community loving and sharing our products with others; the positive feedback is continuous. To know there are hundreds of you out there who have enjoyed a meal from our farm this year, that only Alex and I, one husband/wife team have prepared on our own, is simply amazing.
See you all in 2019!

Oh, hey there! We’ve been away for a minute. 👋🏼
While we unintentionally took a break, so did the hens. Part of eating with the seasons means going without sometimes, if only to make us extra grateful when there’s a harvest to enjoy 😊 🥚

So, to all of our regular egg customers - we will be back to our regular deliveries very soon!

When the chickens see you walk out with the compost pail.. sometimes you don’t make it to the compost pile 😂 🐓
Luckily we have magic chickens, and they’ll turn the yucky compost into yummy eggs 🍳

Not one of these carrots grew in my garden! It was a pretty 💩 year for our garden aside from the perennials and a few tomatoes.
Thanks to extended family we have a winters worth of carrots in the freezer for soups and stews during the off season!
I’ve also come to the conclusion that I may need a commercial kitchen to feed these monsters through their teenage years 😳
Fair warning: if you’re eating any cooking that involves carrots from me this winter.. my daughter may have bit into every single one. .
Oh yeah, and my faucet decided to break right when I had about 35 lbs of carrots in the sink to wash. Clothespin to the rescue. 👌🏼
