We are incredibly honoured (and honestly still a little surprised!) to share that Miklat Recovery Program has once again received the Powell River Business Award for Non-Profit Excellence — 2026.

This recognition means so much because it comes from our own community — a community that believes in recovery, second chances, and the power of people helping people.

A heartfelt thank you to the Powell River Chamber of Commerce for this acknowledgement, and to the people of qathet who continue to stand beside us, support our work, and cheer on the men and families walking the path of recovery.

But the real credit belongs to our extraordinary staff and counsellors. Day after day, they show up with compassion, patience, humour, and unwavering dedication. The work isn’t easy — it asks a lot of the people who do it — but watching lives change, families reconnect, and hope return makes every long day worth it.

The evening itself was full of proud moments. We were thrilled to see Steve Macleod recognized for the incredible work at Convenient Chef, and it was pretty special seeing Zach, Gus, Brandon and Howard absolutely running the kitchen and serving an amazing meal. And congratulations to A&W as well — made even sweeter knowing one of our grads is part of that team. Recovery showing up everywhere in our community… we love to see it.

Awards are wonderful, but the real reward is witnessing someone believe in themselves again — sometimes for the very first time in years.

Thank you, Powell River, for believing in recovery as much as we do. We’re grateful, humbled, and more motivated than ever to keep doing the work.

Healthy nutritious food is a very important part of recovery. What you consume relates closely to how you feel. We love our chefs who put their hearts into the food we serve and it shows. Thank you to Zach, Benny, and Gus for all the effort. Everyone appreciates you guys so much.

We are delighted to celebrate Steve M, a skilled chef and esteemed alumnus, on his outstanding achievement of five years of sobriety. As one of our first graduates, Steve has garnered widespread acclaim as a talented chef, making him an exemplary candidate for prestigious honours, such as Michelin stars, should the guide arrive in town. 🤔🌟

Our staff's commitment to delivering outstanding care and support to our clients is unwavering, driven by a genuine passion for addiction recovery. Huge thanks to Kelly Keil and The Peak Newspaper for donating three perfect desks, a love seat, some chairs, and standing desks for Miklat. It's divine timing because we just finished some office spaces and needed new desks. Cancelling our Ikea order, which will save a bunch and help keep funding going to the client programming! Thank you also to Mike Kaban of Remax for bringing a moving truck and helping us get everything over to Mcguffie and Arbutus.

We are honoured to share that Miklat has successfully completed our very first sweat.

This was a powerful and deeply meaningful moment for our little recovery community—grounded in humility, healing, and connection. We extend our sincere gratitude to John Louie for his guidance, generosity, and leadership in making this possible.

We also wish to acknowledge, honour, and show deep respect to the First Nations peoples. We recognize that these teachings and ceremonies come from Indigenous cultures and are only possible through the trust, permission, and stewardship of Indigenous Knowledge Keepers. We are grateful to walk this path with respect and responsibility.

With humility and gratitude, we look forward to continuing this work in a good way.

Graduation Day at Miklat!

Today we are celebrating two remarkable graduates—Gus and Jason—and three months of grit, growth, and real transformation.

Gus has been a steady force of leadership from day one. A natural role model and a gifted speaker (that Christmas speech still gets talked about), he has consistently given back through volunteering and by being an active part of the local church family. Gus leads by example—quietly, generously, and with purpose—and the ripple effect of that leadership is felt throughout our community.

Jason showed us what resilience truly looks like. Facing an ACL surgery midway through treatment would test anyone—but Jason met that challenge head-on. With determination (and a good sense of humour intact), he pushed through recovery while staying committed to his program. A heartfelt thank you to Recovery Victoria for graciously providing a space in their beautiful sober living home and for ensuring Jason got home safely from the hospital. We’re happy to report he’s recovering well, on schedule, and continuing to thrive in sober living.

To everyone involved—staff, supports, partners, and peers—thank you for standing alongside these men. And to Gus and Jason: congratulations on your graduation. You’ve earned every bit of this moment. Onward and upward.
