A fantastic anatomical dissection showing the immense amount of nerves in this region of the SIJ, buttocks, hip that commonly has issues. But do you notice how supported these joint structures are? The SI joint doesn’t go out of place, it doesn’t sublux in the absence of a major blow or force like falling off a ladder and landing on a 2x4. It’s stable. When you experience pain in this region or the sensation of being “out” or “locked up” it’s typically an issue with neuromotor control and your brain draws awareness to the area to give the sensation of discomfort so that you do something about it. Typically - to change the neurological feedback from that area into something more desirable, something that suggests you got this, you can control this area. So why does an adjustment help so much? It’s a quick and easy press of the “reset” button for neuromotor control of the area. It’s typically short-lived if movement patterns, loads, or stressors don’t change in the area. That’s why an adjustment isn’t a replacement for things that improve joint stabilization mechanisms such as mindful movements, exercising with intention, Feldenkrais, qi gong, tai chi, etc etc. All of these will take longer but create a permanent change in the way the area is controlled which will lead to less pain and less frequent sensations of needing to be “cracked”.
