What is play therapy? Play therapy is where “trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”
Why would I chose play therapy for my child? It is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the “language” of the child – play. Most often used with children ages 4 to 12, play therapy allows the child to better express themselves and resolve their problems.
Parents/caregivers would use play therapy as a primary or supportive therapy for anger management, grief and loss, divorce and abandonment, and crisis and trauma. It is also used for anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism or pervasive development, academic and social development, physical and learning disabilities and conduct disorders.
Play therapy works best when the parent/caregiver is actively involved in the treatment process.
