Prince George Mental Health Consumer Council

Prince George Mental Health Consumer Council Founded 2006. We come together as consumers of mental health services to make a difference for all people living with a mental illness.

The Prince George Mental Health Consumer Council (PGMHCC) is a consumer group with direct experience in mental health issues, educating the public where we can, increasing awareness, and lobbying for systemic change. The Prince George Mental Health Consumer Council (PGMHCC) is comprised of consumers of mental health services from all walks of life and living with different illnesses. In this capacity, we know that we need to have a voice in our recovery and maintaining wellness. The Council meets at the Activity Centre for Empowerment on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 11:30AM. If you are personally affected by mental illness or are related to someone affected by mental illness, please drop by and add your voice. Objectives:

We Need a Voice - To be involved in decision making processes in the health care system that affects us as consumers

We Need Change - To help educate and eliminate the stigma and discrimination against people living with mental illness who reside in our community

We Need Safe Homes - To actively support programs that work to provide safe affordable housing for mental health consumers

We Need Each Other - To provide support and hope

Have you seen what the Carefree Society is doing now? Check out the November schedule posted onsite. Recall how thaputic a nature walk is? Book it today!

The society was HandyDART before HD was a thing, and now having a new direction to give you inclusive and accessible rides to natural areas and parks in the region. They have an open house today to show off the bus at 1030 on Queensway! I'll try to make our meeting today at 1130 for the council, hope to see you there!

At our last meeting, we joined Jo Anne Stanton and reflected on our memories of her brother Harold, and his wife Ester. He was a valued member of our board, his wife a familiar face. She attended the meeting and shared her obituary. It's below. Thank you, Jo Anne, for allowing me to post it here with an image of him. I hope you join this page.

'Harold W F Stainton passed away quietly at home on July 12, 2025. He was born in Terrace, BC in April, 1964, the youngest of four children. He had lived in Terrace, Cache Creek, Kamloops, and Logan Lake, moving to Prince George in 2007 with his wife, Ester.

Harold was a very quiet person, but very giving of his time to his friends. While in Logan Lake he was a volunteer fireman. In Prince George he volunteered his time at ACE (Activity Centre for Empowerment) where he was their treasurer for many years. He was very helpful in driving people around town who didn’t have vehicles and couldn’t afford cabs.

He is survived by his stepson DJ (Eun Kyoung Cho), granddaughter Zoey, his only sister Jo-Anne, his oldest brother Jim (Alma) as well as a nephew and nieces. Also missing him are some very good friends who considered him family. He was predeceased by his wife Ester, an older brother Neil, a sister-in-law Brenda, and his parents Harold and Doris. He loved his dogs throughout the years and his kitty, Tigger, is missing him greatly.

Rest in Peace “baby” brother. You will be forever loved and missed and are now reunited with your loving wife of 27 years.'
