Beautiful bark harvest curing by the fire. The inner bark of Alder is one that is best used dried and "aged" a few months. When it's fresh it is not toxic, but is a potent tonic that can tend to upset the tummy. Love watching the bark turning from green to this beautiful rust colour as it gets exposed to the air.

The Little Things are the Big Things 🌳
Harvesting one of my favourite tree medicines in the snow today 🌿 Alder is a nurse tree. The nurturer of the forest that helps rebuild the land after an area has been damaged. This is why we always see it growing along the edges of roads not deep in the forest. It is a water tree as well.... This time of year we get a little glimmer of the light beginning to slowly return, and sometimes also, where light gets shone into some dark corners.
Alder is a tree that helps us build resilience and release pain and stuck emotions. It gives strength when people feel bereft, destitute, or utterly hopeless. The little cones and catkins (male and female reproductive parts of the tree) are already quietly growing even though there's snow on the ground and everything else looks fairly dead. I always love seeing this sweet and sturdy little reminder and symbolism.

As always, there's the interesting correlation between the spirit of plants and the effects they have on the physical body....

I can never say enough about Alder; Being a "water tree" it works primarily on the "waters" of the body: it is a potent cleanser and stimulant of the lymphatics and blood. This helps the body gain more resilience to pathogens and supports oxygenation and immunity. If the blood and lymph are happy, the cells are happy. If the cells are happy, the body is happy.
Interestingly, Alder is also a great respiratory herb, the lungs being where grief "sits" or can sometimes get stuck in the physical body.
Such a special tree and so nice getting to spend a tough day at "the office" out hanging with my tree buddies. Thankfully they don't mind a bit of a haircut!

So exciting finding these giants! My very first herb mentor told me on an herb walk: "almost all mushrooms are medicinal.... but probably the least are the ones at the grocery store." Classic! 😂 Very exciting that we are discovering so much more about the medicinal benefits of so many fungi!
