When parents bring their children in to see us at for an orthodontic consultation, parents will often ask, “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗲?”

Primary teeth (or “baby teeth” as they are often called) are teeth that will fall out as the permanent teeth (“adult teeth“) push them out of the mouth. The mechanism of how baby teeth fall out is as follows: as the budding permanent tooth begins to develop its root underneath the baby tooth, it grows towards the baby tooth and resorbs the root of the baby tooth, making the baby tooth loose! This is why when you look at a baby tooth after it has fallen out of the mouth, it has none of its root (or very little) attached to it!

There is no “set age” at which all the baby teeth will fall out, even though on average most children will lose their last baby tooth by 13 years old. However, patients as young as 9 years old can have their entire set of adult teeth, and some adults still have baby teeth (often due to a missing or impacted permanent tooth). For this reason it is recommended that children see an orthodontist by age 7 to identify any potential dental development issues.

One in five children aged 12-18 experience bullying. Unfortunately, a person’s teeth are often ranked as one of the top targeted features of those experiencing bullying.

At Papadopsmiles Orthodontics, many children and teenagers come through our doors with their families wanting to improve their smile. We are blessed to be able to not only create healthy smiles and bites, but also make a positive difference in the self-esteem of our patients on a daily basis.

Here in 🇨🇦 we proudly celebrate Pink Shirt Day, but today — October 22 — we’re also joining our friends at the AAO to celebrate “Unity Day” and support their mission to take a bite out of bullying! 💪

In recognition of 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑩𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉, we challenge everyone to come together, stand up for those you know who are experiencing bullying, and spread kindness to those who need it most.
