After post-holing for km’s, narrowly avoiding skimo-ers, and plowing through fresh snow I was somehow hoping for a reward at the top, a great view of Taylor Lake. Darn it! For the second mountain run/hike in a row the vista was…snow. But no problem, still plenty of beauty to go around! And what’s better after than an Irish cream ale? Nothing.

Continual learning is underrated. I spent the weekend at the Triathlon Canada headquarters in Victoria aiming to improve my coaching skills. Thanks to for putting on a great course, it was well with the trip.

What a day! If you like running on snow, then Nordegg was the place for you last weekend! No matter the weather, Landslide Lake is beautiful….even if you could hardly see the lake through the snowfall. Forever grateful to be healthy & strong enough to run these adventures with great friends like .miner.ultra. Find a way to get fit, get strong, and take part in cool adventures like this!

Sports are the best. My racing has taken me all kinds of places I otherwise never would have been. This past week has been amazing with my boys. I’ve seen ._schmitt pitch for Butler in El Dorado, Kansas. We saw a college football game in Stillwater, Oklahoma during homecoming (a major deal in the south!!). We tailgated for a Chiefs game in Kansas City, Missouri. Great memories & connections made, all based around sport. I love it, super cool to get to do it with my kiddos!

What do you do when your 17-year-old daughter asks you to run 50km with her at her first ultra attempt? You say YES! Despite a foot of snow the night before, despite the plummeting temps, despite intense knee pain for the last 20km (hey, her previous long run was 23km)….we got it done.

A lot of times I’m told by runners that they run to inspire their kiddos. And sometimes the script gets flipped. Despite the knee pain & accumulating fatigue Naomi never had a negative word. Not one. I could learn a lot from that single fact. It was amazing & motivating at the same time. Such a blessing to do this with her.

Fantastic day all around for GRIT athletes, as everyone who started finished the race on less than ideal conditions. They showed up, they showed grit, they finished. There’s honor in that. Well done!

These truly are the best days, I wish they’d never end. Hanging with my boys, watching them play a game they love and are so passionate about. And doing it with great people. There’s no place I’d rather be (even ahead of being at the Oilers game 6 clincher!). Yep, these are the days.

You can have all the training in the world….have your nutrition dialled in….have a positive mindset. But having problems with your feet (blisters, hot spots, runner’s toe) = death for a runner! One of the skills of successful trail & ultra running is learning how to cope, how to manage problems when they arise. And they will, they always do. Come out to run with us this Wednesday, after which we’ll have a talk by led by our de facto expert , who will walk us through some of the foot maintenance needed to run extremely long distances (Trish in fact just covered 263km of trail running at the southern lakes ultra in New Zealand). See you in a couple days!

These are the days. Watching Naomi do her thing at XC Ski Nationals (best race of the year at the most important time!), waking up to the mountain view, getting in a sunny hike, then capping it off with a little Irish music on St Patty’s Day. The best. Next race in an hour!

Join me this Wednesday for an easy run (leaving from Garden Heights parking lot @ 6:15), which will be followed up by a chat at Sawback Brewery on the debate of using super shoes for your big races in 2025. Are they worth the price tag? Do they make difference? Let’s talk about it!

Most of you will remember America’s Funniest Home Videos, right? Each show they made sure to include some clown get blown off the back of a treadmill….and we would laugh at him. Well, this weekend that clown was me. Bored out of my mind by minute 11 (how does do this for 60km?) the focus drifted….and the next moment I banged my knee…then the shoulder….then the head….then was spit out the back. And my first thought? Did anybody see me?? Haha!! I wish I was recorded so I could laugh at myself. In the end nothing more than a scraped knee…and the humiliation of falling off a treadmill.

Good run with the crew last night! And thanks to for once again hosting us, where we had a discussion about the merits of using sodium bicarbonate as a supplement. Is it useful for endurance athletes? What is a proper dosage? Has anybody tried it before? What does the research say? You needed to be there to find out…ha! It’s always fun to hang out with fellow running nerds to just chat about our love for the sport. I’ll plan another one in February (topic undecided), so look out for that announcement.
