It integrates cognition, emotion, and sensation. When we move rhythmically, especially to music, we stimulate areas of the brain connected to memory, emotion, and reward. This can gently shift long-held stress patterns and create new pathways for resilience.

Many of my Massage Therapy clients will book a regular massage therapy session, and somewhere around 15-20 minutes into their appointment, they ask me about Somatic Therapy. They tell me they either exist in survival mode, experiencing feelings fight or flight on a daily basis, or they have become numb and have shut down their ability to feel and be in touch with their emotions.

In a nutshell, their nervous systems are not regulated. They are no longer operating in their window of tolerance.

We often talk about stress as if itโ€™s a personal failure of relaxation skills. It takes more than the right app, mantra, or inspirational quote to convince your nervous system to settle down.

Your nervous system is motivated by safety.

When youโ€™ve been overwhelmed, overworked, or emotionally stretched for a long time, everything feels much larger and explosive than it really is. A sense of calm, or an experience of ease in the body, is a natural result of feeling supported, resourced, and not under threat. The body responds to breath, presence, and gentle attention.

Somatic therapy is based on this simple truth.

Instead of asking you to think your way out of stress, it helps you feel your way back into regulation. It teaches you how to notice sensations, track tension, and respond to yourself with curiosity instead of criticism. Somatic therapy develops a new form of communication between your body and your mind.

When your nervous system becomes regulated, you become less reactive. You gain clarity and focus, no longer driven by emotional responses and overwhelming stress. You return to living life in your window of tolerance, where you can process and integrate information with ease.
