Daily obsession: Anti-inflammatory tea! šŸ«–

(Yes, I see the opportunity for a great play on words here but I’m playing it cool with good spelling, haha…)

This stuff tastes lovely and is packed with functional herbs: from the classic turmeric + black pepper combo for inflammation support, to burdock root for gentle flushing and detox support.

Warm, a little spicy, and so good with a drizzle of honey, it’s built to soothe, calm, and support the body from the inside out. Nature does it best. 🌿

They say you shouldn’t talk about politics, religion, or death- which is hilarious because those are basically my favorite topics, haha. Add a soft spot for taboo conversations, and here we are! So in that spirit, today’s post is brought to you by yet another slightly uncomfortable subject: herpes! šŸ™ƒ

Herpes is an extremely common virus and can show up in many forms including cold sores, shingles, and other uncomfortable rashes or sores. Estimates suggest that around 60–70% of people in Canada carry HSV-1, and roughly 15% carry HSV-2; as for shingles, if you’ve had chicken pox, you’re at risk.

Realistically, this is something most of us are affected by, directly or indirectly, so we should probably be talking about it…

The virus itself is generally harmless, but outbreaks can be really uncomfortable. After having the unfortunate experience of shingles a few times last winter, I started experimenting with making little balms for myself, and from there, these little guys were born. I call them Hush-1 and Hush-2.

These balms are made with herbs traditionally used for viral support and skin healing (with growing clinical research to support their use) especially lemon balm and heal-all. Hush-1 is designed for oral cold sores, and Hush-2 is for more sensitive outbreaks. They are gentle, discreet, smell like fresh citrus, and they’ll work well alongside other antiviral supports.

Questions? No need to stay hush- hush. šŸ˜

No doubt that we’re having a Prairie Winter here this year, and that’s just what Prairie Hands Barrier Balm is for.

This rich, smooth, spicy-sweet stuff was formulated specifically for those of us who work with our hands and wash a lot: barbers, blue collar folks, gardeners, tattooers, and of course- my kindred RMT’s. Infused with plantain, heal all, and comfrey, it works on chapped, cracked hands along with wind-burnt or weather-burnt skin. šŸ™ŒšŸ»

I use mine all day, every day (because it smells awesome and I have an endless supply, haha) but even a once-a-day application before bed will do the trick.

Wanna try it out? Get at me…I’m a person! šŸ’ššŸŒæ

Happy Winter Solstice šŸ–¤šŸ¤

On the shortest day of the year, I want to pause and thank all of you for being part of my little business journey. Many of you have been loyal clients and friends for 15+ years, and some of you are brand-new connections I’m so grateful to be making. Without you guys Metta Massage & Apothecary simply wouldn’t exist. šŸ¦‰šŸŖ·

So thank you! …for the trust, the encouragement, and all the love along the way. Sending it back to each of you this chilly Winter Day and looking forward to getting my hands (and herbs) on you again in the New Year! ā„ļø

It low level broke my heart to put lids on these Body Butters, but at least there’s a photo to memorialize their cute little whipped tops, haha. šŸŒ€

One thing that sets the products I’m making here apart is the herbal element. With skincare and topicals, the oils are always slow infused with plants before batching, so beneath the surface there’s subtle plant energy quietly doing its work.

This rich winter body butter is infused with local calendula and rosehips: both classic skincare allies that are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and collagen-supportive. The calendula came straight from my own garden, and the rosehips were ethically foraged by my very cool friend (go give her a creep, she’s doing neat stuff!)

Sweet, forest-grounded and gently spiced, this is a deeply nourishing winter skin quencher. I’ve got three left on the shelf; holler if you need one! šŸ¤ā„ļø

It’s cold tonight and so very snowy, and central Alberta is full of different ideas about this!

There was a time where I’d have given almost anything to dodge winter, but as time passed, I came to understand that every season has a message. Winter’s message is: slow down, turn inwards, curl up and tell stories. Enjoy the fire (or furnace šŸ˜‰) and find time with yourself…maybe even pour a bath!

So many of us don’t get much time to ourselves, but this season is a gift; a reminder to stay home and get cozy. You don’t owe the commercial industry anything; you can chill my friends!

My cute little bath salt tubes can help you with that lesson. They smell awesome and bathing with the herbs is so healing. And if you’re a person who doesn’t have time to clean the tub? No probelmo. I’ve got little baggies for ya.

So take a deep breathe out.
The season of rest is here.
Nature’s got your back. šŸ’›

Tis the season for Immune Support, Throat Spray and Cough Syrups- a little care goes a long way at this time of the year!

āš•ļøImmunis Tincture- a traditional alcohol extraction for short term, acute immune support

ā„ļø Throat Spray- a sweet and cool dual extract to help gently soothe through the day (a personal fave)

šŸÆ Cough syrups- honey and glycerine syrups infused with herbs known clinically and traditionally for cough relief; one to soothe in the evening, one to help you expectorate/cough it out by day

IMMUNIS TINCTURE
Just weighed out the herbs for this batch: a short-term, first-signs formula for when the throat scritches, the glands flex, or the body shifts into early defence. We’ve got:
🌿 Echinacea angustifolia
🌿 Elderberries and flowers
🌿 Oregano leaf and flowers
🌿 Goldenrod
🌿 Ginger root
🌿 Yarrow
This blend brings together plants that waken the immune system’s front line, move heat, open the pores, clear early congestion, encourage circulation, and support the lymph as the body responds.

Nothing heroic: just classic herbs working together in the first days and hours of imbalance.

Slow made. Seasonal. Herbal medicine at the ready. …Speaking of ready, give me a month and this batch will be up for grabs; right in time for hectic days ahead! šŸŒ¬ļø

SamhainšŸ•ÆļøšŸ–¤

The tradition of Samhain is as ancient as the Druids themselves. In Irish lore, today was the day to honour the ancestors and the spirits of those who had gone on before. The ancients believed that now, halfway between harvest and winter, was when the veil between the ethereal and the physical was thinnest…so spirits dwelling in the liminal space could move more easily between the worlds.

This year, I found it fitting that Samhain also marks a halfway point in my studies towards Death Doula certification. Death, in our culture, is often shyed away from; and fair enough, death is a very hard part of life. Conversations about it are something we might avoid and even fear. I’m seeking to understand our relationship to death more deeply, to learn to speak about it more openly, and in time, to hopefully help others grow more comfortable with its presence, too.

So with that, Happy Samhain and blessed day of the Dead, my friends! May we honour our ancestors and those who have already embarked upon the mysterious journey of death, and may we make space to contemplate the shared destiny of every single one of us who are bound to follow.

Handmade ā€œVicksā€, but better!

Small-batch Respiratory Relief Balm is ready, just in time for the cool season. This traditional chest balm combines bright camphor and peppermint to help open the chest and clear the airway- plus the added support of oils infused with eucalyptus, thyme, mullein, and oregano.

It’s the comfort of those childhood chest rubs from Mom… with a little extra herbal help.🌿
