In it's most basic form, trauma occurs when our experience overwhelms our available coping resources. This can change moment to moment, person to person. Some days we have more coping capacity than others. Some people have different coping capacities. That's why no trauma experience is the same. It's also why sometimes we think we shouldn't be impacted by something "so stupid"... but I'll let you in a secret, your body knows what it can handle and what it can't. Listen to it if it's telling you something is too much!

What would it be like if we were friends with our body? Sometimes we feel betrayed by our body but the truth is our mind usually betrays our body. When we are faced with emotional activation, our body provides cues for what we need. Often, our mind can override these cues and tell us to push through, we can handle it. Truth is, sometimes we can handle it but at what cost? What if you connected with your body, paid attention to it, listened to it... and gave it what it's asking for? We can heal trauma responses by befriending our bodies and working with the body to create a sense of safety and control. The body and mind are powerful on their own, but together they are unstoppable.

For so many years mental health has been stigmatized and hidden. The truth is everything begins with mental health...our relationships, self worth, focus, motivation, prosperity, sense of connection, happiness, even our physical health. I want to share a repost today!

How often do you truly slow down? How often do you just notice what's going on for you emotionally and physically? How often do you allow yourself to just be?

There are tons of strategies, both healthy and maladaptive, that we have utilized and even made habits. Sometimes we recommend distraction, however it can become the only strategy we use, leading us to further ignore the signs of what we are experiencing.

What would happen if you just sat for a few minutes in stillness? Maybe you are unable to do that on your own at this time because quite frankly, it's scary! Therapy offers a safe space to develop the ability to notice, acknowledge and honour ourselves where we are at the present moment.

WOOP is a technique used to set goals. Take five minutes to yourself and go through the following steps.
Wish: think of 3 to 5 words that represent your goal and repeat them to yourself multiple times
Outcome: think of the best outcome of your goal and imagine how it would feel to be there
Obstacle: search for the main obstacle that might keep you from attaining your goal
Plan: make a plan to overcome the obstacles, use the form "if (obstacle) then (action)" to support yourself
WOOP can be used repeatedly for the same goal, and provides an excellent starting point!

The “Mask You Live In” is a documentary that follows a number of boys and young men as they try to be true to themselves and deal with societal views of masculinity. They’re often told to “be a man” and hide their emotions. Compared to girls, boys are more likely to be diagnosed with a behaviour disorder, be prescribed stimulant medication, drop out, struggle with substances, and complete su***de. On top of this, boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems. Maybe you're a male looking to explore these issues for yourself or maybe you're a caregiver looking to support a male. Understanding the impacts of these longstanding views can provide you confidence in the male emotional experience.

Our nervous systems are incredible things that we regularly overlook. Whether it is an everyday activity, a conflictual discussion or witnessing a trauma. Our body holds experiences and works tirelessly to protect us without conscious action. Often our responses aren't within our awareness which causes us to continue engaging in patterns that are difficult.

As a practitioner, I (Brittany) am deepening my learning about trauma and nervous system response through Somatic Experiencing training over the weekend. Being curious about my own nervous system and its power to support others exploration of their nervous systems has given me so many growth opportunities! I am excited to continue infusing these principles into my practice!
