Think Twice Before You Step on Ice 🧊

Ice thickness and strength can vary from place to place. Clear, hard ice is the safest for travel — but always assess conditions carefully.

💡 Remember to:
• Check local ice conditions.
• Re-check the ice every time you visit.
• Avoid slush, refrozen layers and cloudy ice.
• Stay clear of moving water and pressure ridges.

💪 Smart choices on the ice help everyone get home safely.

Happy Family Weekend from Your First Responders! 💙
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Family Day long weekend! With the beautiful weather we’ve been having, we know many families will be heading out to enjoy the outdoors — especially with it being Free Fishing Weekend 🎣
If you’re heading out ice fishing with the family, please remember:
🧊 Check ice thickness before heading out — conditions can change quickly with warmer temps.
🚗 Be cautious with vehicles and heavy equipment on the ice.
🦺 Wear ice picks and consider a life jacket, especially for children.
📱 Bring a charged phone and let someone know your plans.
👶 Keep a close eye on kids and pets near open water or thinner areas.
Warmer days don’t always mean safer ice. Take a few extra minutes to plan ahead so your weekend stays full of great memories — not emergencies.
Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the time with the people who matter most 💙

❄️ Cold Weather Safety Reminder ❄️
From your local Southshore First Responders,

With temperatures dropping, a few small steps can make a big difference:
🧣 Stay warm
Layer up, cover exposed skin, and take breaks from the cold when you can.
🔥 Heat safely
Make sure vents are clear, space heaters are used properly, and carbon monoxide alarms are working on every level of your home.
🚨 Check your alarms
Now is the time to test smoke and CO detectors—especially if you’re using fuel-burning heat sources.
🤝 Look out for each other
Check in on neighbours, seniors, and anyone who may need a hand with heat, groceries, or snow removal.
Cold weather is easier—and safer—when we take care of ourselves and each other.
Stay warm. Stay safe. 💙

What you do after a snowstorm matters. Make smart choices after the storm.

🧂 Clear and salt sidewalks and walkways to prevent slips and falls.
🌊 Watch for flooding as snow melts, especially near basements and drains.
🔍 Check your pipes. Frozen pipes can burst and cause hidden damage.
🦠 After thawing, look for water damage and mould in affected areas.

Small actions now can prevent big problems later. Take a few minutes to check your home and surroundings.

🚨 Post-Storm Safety Reminder🚨
After a significant snowfall, we know many of you are digging out driveways, sidewalks, and access points. Heavy, wet snow can put serious strain on the body — even for those used to physical work.
❄️ Take breaks
❄️ Push snow when possible instead of lifting
❄️ Stay hydrated
❄️ Listen to your body — chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath are warning signs
Looking after yourself helps ensure you’re there when others need you. Stay safe out there.

🎄Day 11: Children & Pet Fire Safety

Young children and four-legged critters get excited by twinkly lights and decorations, but their curiosity can sometimes create fire hazards. Keep the season merry and safe with a few easy tips:

👧 For Kids: Create a one-metre “kid-free zone” around anything hot — candles, fireplaces, space heaters, you name it. Little ones should also never be left alone near open flames.

🐾 For Pets: Pets love to sniff, paw and chew, so keep cords tucked away and candles out of reach. If you can, swap real candles for electric ones to avoid any accidental tail-swishes or curious nudges.

🎄 Day 7: Candle Fire Safety

’Tis the season for sparkle, not smoke! December is the busiest month for candle-related home fires. Stay safe when using candles:

🕯️ Keep candles well away from anything that can burn.
🚫 Avoid placing them in high-traffic spots where kids or pets might bump into them.
💤 Always blow them out before leaving the room or heading to bed.
