Sciatica is a common term used by just about everybody, but what actually is it?

First we have to understand the sciatic nerve. This nerve is the largest nerve in the body and originates in your lower back, runs through the back of your pelvis and down the back of your leg.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve gets inflamed. This can be caused by muscles, bone or other structures putting pressure on the nerve. You may have symptoms of burning, numbness, tingling or a heavy aching pain that starts in the glutes and runs down the back of the leg.

However there are other things that can present like sciatica. Piriformus syndrome is one of them. Piriformus is a muscle in the glutes that the sciatic nerve runs very close to. And when this muscle gets tight it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve creating the same symptoms (although the symptoms usually are more present around the glutes and hip, not fully down the leg). The difference between the two is with piriformus syndrome there is no inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

Massage therapy can help relieve the muscle tightness that could be causing the symptoms.
