“Ok great… but how do I get to this point??”
Counselling can help you deconstruct the societal pressures you’ve internalized and identify YOUR truest values. This, in turn, will empower you to choose your actions in alignment with what you value and envision for your life.

WE’RE BACK! I hope you were able to find some beauty this summer and took some time to reconnect with yourself. 😌

For some, this time of year means busier schedules - whether it be kids’ activities, a busier work season, or maybe both! Regardless of how full someone’s schedule is, we must remind ourselves that we do not have any ownership over someone else’s time, and we can be mindful of how we communicate social inquiries. Just because someone has “free time” or no concrete plans on the weekend, does not necessarily mean they want to remedy that.

Asking someone if they are free on a certain date without also letting them know why you are asking, can bring on feelings of unnecessary pressure and stress, (and can even feel like a form of manipulation in some cases) to those on the receiving end.

I challenge you to really think about what brings you more peace and rejuvenation. For everyone, this looks different. Some need more connection and social interaction, while others require less, for example.

HOWEVER! Do not stop asking when it comes to relationships you value. Just because someone says no a time or two, does not mean they do not value your friendship as well. Connection is important, and in this busy season of life, helping each other make that connection by offering opportunities and a level of understanding can make a world of difference as we head into shorter days and colder months. ❤️

It is not uncommon these days for “trendy” words and phrases to be inaccurately or overused to describe undesirable personality characteristics or behaviours.

Although it is always fantastic that awareness is increasing in the area of mental health, it is important to be mindful of this as it can invalidate and dilute the meaning and importance of an experience, situation, or even a medical diagnosis.

It can be difficult to trust that your counsellor holds no judgement towards you. Especially if you’ve never had experience with this before.
Although most counsellors innately are empathetic and have a high capacity for compassion, we are also trained and assessed to ensure we practice unconditional positive regard: the basic acceptance and support of a person, regardless of what the person says or does.

Counselling is a safe space. Safe space for vulnerability, in which you can choose to be supported in silence or speak about what’s going on for you.

Yes, navigating through life’s challenges or trying to improve upon yourself can be work. You might notice this after a heavier counselling session in the form of being emotionally and even physically tired.

But as we go through this process, we might find that we are over-analyzing our thoughts and behaviours. If you are, you might notice that instead of the post-session recovery, you are more consistently feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. Or perhaps, consistently over-analyzing is what brought you to seek counselling in the first place!

As Sana Powell says, “Learning to observe your thoughts and remembering that they do not define you, is key… [Sometimes] try to observe and acknowledge your thoughts without immediately responding to them. Encourage yourself to pause before responding to a thought so you can first determine if a response is even warranted.”

Go easy on yourself. 😌 We are complex beings, and you are doing amazing. ❤️
