Squashing Self Sabotage is your focus. Remember that self sabotage can come from your own inner rebellion OR from the behavior of friends, family and colleagues. Others might feel threatened when you embark on a healing tobacco-free journey - it’s uncomfortable for them and they encourage you to smoke again.
Here’s how you squash it: First identify it, then identify what your brain is loading up in response to it, and next load up the truth. Ask yourself “is it true? Is it really true?”. Disregard the thought to smoke in this situation and acknowledge that when we start feeling good in ways that are unfamiliar to us our body starts to freak out and wants to go back to the way things were. Just know that things will never be the same - they will be better without the smoking.

Final Stop Smoking Strategy #12 - Follow the 3 Rules of Relapse. You may have slipped and had a drag or snuck a smoke, but use that as a learning experience. What got you there? Who were you with? What were you doing? These are important clues to help you develop other things to do instead of smoking if that situation comes up for you again. Here are the 3 rules of relapse - Never smoke a ci******es that you didn’t buy (no mooching etc); never buy cigs in a place you are about to relapse; and if you do cave and buy a pack of cigs, just smoke one and throw the rest away. AND never think of a slip or relapse in black and white terms. Continue to think of yourself as a non-smoker and get right back on track.

SSS 11 - Face Your Fears! Scary work I know, but instead of thinking “what’s the worst that could happen”, switch it to “what’s the best that could happen”? When you identify the fear you feel, you can also identify how good conquering that fear will feel. Maybe it’s the fear of failing, or the fear of quitting smoking and not having ways to deal with stress, or boredom, or not being able to connect with your spouse or friends. What is it? Stop Smoking Strategy #10 SSS10 - Use the 4 D’s instead of smoking. Drink water, Delay the cig, Distract Yourself, and Deep Breathing. If you don’t like water add some lemon or mint to improve the taste. Put the water in a beautiful goblet so it feels fancy to drink it. Delaying the cigarette might help you to eliminate the ones that really aren’t even needed - instead of waking up and lighting up, just wait and see what happens. Distract yourself from smoking by doing something else, AND Deep Breathing is a great way to cleanse those lungs and start clearing the body of toxins. Use the 5-5-7 breath. Breathe in for a count of 5, hold for a count of 5, and exhale for a count of 7. Do a few rounds of this breath. ’s

Stop Smoking Strategy #9 SSS9 - Tame those Triggers!! First step is to be more mindful of what triggers you to smoke. Each time you light up a smoke ask yourself “Was I actually craving this? Or was it just a habit loop?” Identify and write down those triggers and then think about and make a plan for what you are going to do instead in those moments.

Starting a daily practice will reprogram the brain to release “feel good” chemicals which means you will quit smoking and feel great at the same time. Many of you are already smoking outdoors only, but for those who are still smoking inside, consider changing the status of your home to smoke-free. Think about how amazing your home will smell, and the freshness of the air as the smoke clears out. This strategy will improve your odds of successfully quitting as well.
