History Harbour

History Harbour Are you curious about your family tree but don't know where to start? Follow me for tips! I didn’t even know what ethnicity I was.

When I began my own genealogical journey back in 2009, I had some significant obstacles in my way. I spent my childhood thousands of kilometers from my extended family, and there were few to no oral histories that could fill in the blanks in our tree. I'm the daughter of an immigrant, and only one of my Canadian ancestors lived and died in the same place they were born. But over time, very slowly but surely, I pieced together the little bits of information I could find and eventually got to where I am now. Along the way, I discovered so many lost stories of courage, hardship, and adventure - from my Great-Great-Grandma Elizabeth who was born in a Welsh colony in Argentina and immigrated to Southern Saskatchewan, to my impoverished African Great-Great-Grandma Hannah who was taken from the streets of Brighton, England and sent to Canada alone in 1872 as British Home Child. Who knows what secrets and triumphs lie in your own family tree ...

For anyone who has wondered about their ethnic origins or wants to connect with DNA relative, Ancestry.ca currently has a big discount on their DNA tests. This sale is on until November 19, 2023 (link in comments). I did my test a few years back, and it was a total game changer for me. I have met distant relatives and discovered my ethnic roots - which include 9 different countries/regions, including Ivory Coast and Cameroon! Your ethnic percentage results mean that someone in the last 200 years of your family history was 100% from that region.

I would love to hear your stories! Let me know what you find!

Whether this is your first try at mapping your ancestors, or if you are a few miles down the road already, there is always something new and exciting to discover when exploring your family tree.

This book was designed to help you discover, record and map out five generations of your family - from you to your great-great-grandparents (31 people in total). The method I used here focuses on direct ancestors (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents) and purposely leaves out sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. My goal with this workbook is to help you build the foundation of your tree, and after your direct ancestors have been determined, those other peripheral relatives can be discovered more easily (watch for upcoming History Harbour Publications to help with that, too!).

Happy Hunting!
