Holding a plank while moving cones side to side adds multiple layers of challenge:

🧱 Core stability – maintaining a strong, neutral trunk while one arm moves
πŸ–οΈ Single-arm weight bearing – building shoulder stability and strength
🧠 Motor control & coordination – reaching with precision without collapsing
πŸ”„ Weight shifting – controlled transfers through the upper body
πŸ‹οΈ Endurance – sustaining quality movement over time

Exercises like this help build the strength, stability, and coordination that carry over into everyday movement β€” all while keeping things fun and engaging.

Obstacle course = fun AND functional. πŸ’ͺ🧠

This session had one of our kids crawling up and down wedges, then transitioning into high-knee walking between two boxes β€” combining strength, coordination, and focus all in one.

Activities like this support:
πŸ”Ό Core activation and postural control
🧠 Motor planning and body awareness
πŸ’ͺ Lower limb strength and hip flexor engagement
πŸ”„ Transitions between movement patterns
πŸ˜„ And of course, building confidence while having fun

This exercise is doing more than it looks β€” and every rep has a purpose.

Here, the focus is on combining lower body coordination with postural control:
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Hurdles help train foot placement, step height, and precise leg movement
πŸ‹οΈ Holding weight encourages a forward posture and improves core and trunk engagement
🧠 Together, they challenge balance, timing, and control β€” all key components of functional mobility

For individuals with a spinal cord injury, exercises like this target both neuromuscular activation and the real-life skills needed for safe, confident movement!

Our annual January staff Christmas party did not disappoint! πŸŽ„πŸ§©

We took on an escape room this year and made it out with time to spare! A great way to kick off 2026 together.

Standing balance work isn’t just about staying upright β€” it’s about control, coordination, and reacting to change.

In this session, we’re layering challenges:
πŸ” Switching hands for support
πŸ‘€ Turning the head while maintaining posture
🧠 Hand-eye coordination
πŸ”„ And an unstable bungee that keeps the system dynamic

All of these elements work together to improve core engagement, balance reactions, proprioception, and overall confidence in standing.

Hands-on learning in action! 🧠πŸ’ͺ

Eli (also FSWC Regina Fieldwork Coordinator), took students Brooklyn and Aidan through an education session on the Xcite. They had the chance to try it out themselves β€” feeling how different parameters affect muscle activation and learning more about the practical application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) in a therapy setting.

Exploring how these tools work is just one of the many ways students learn during their time at FSWC!
