Time for some with everyone’s favourite !

This week we are talking Narrow Aisle tip overs!

The narrow aisle Forklift is not equipped with a seat belt or restraining device. For this reason, the procedure to follow in the event of a tip differs from that of other Forklifts.

In the event of a tip over when you are driving forward with forks in front of you, exit the operator’s compartment by stepping out and away from the direction of the tip. If you are driving in reverse, try to stay in the truck and under the overhead guard.

Safety Sky is BACK!

Today’s are all about..... FIT TESTS!

Users who are required to wear tight-fitting respiratory protection must be fitted to ensure that an adequate seal is achieved. A fit test must be conducted:

- Prior to initial use of any respirators
- Every 2 years, however annually is recommended
- When there is a change in face piece

Bonus fun facts ! In order to be fit tested you must:
- Be clean shaven where the respirator seals to the skin
- Not smoke 30 minutes prior to your test

Happy from everyones favourite safety girl!

Today is going to be talking about the emergency procedures of one of her favourite machines - Overhead Cranes!

Some examples of emergency situations:
- runaways
- brake failure
- rigging failure

At any time you must deal with an emergency situation there are 3 steps to take:
1. Barricade the area to keep everyone out of harms way
2. Shut off the power
3. Contact your supervisor once you are sure there is no immediate danger

is here today with some about one of many Telehandler Hazards!

Did you know, that high voltage contact is the largest single cause of fatalities associated with telehandlers? If contact is ever made with an overhead power line use the following procedure:

- stay on the machine unless an emergency forces you to exit

- If you must exit, jump clear of the machine. If part of your body contacts the ground while you are still touching the machine the current will flow through you

- The ground around the machine will be energized. You should slowly move away hopping with your feet together. Do not take big steps as the high voltage across the ground may differ. If your feet contact two areas of different violate it will force the current through your body!

Thank Goodness it’s Friday! That means is back with more !

Today we’re talking Forklifts!

⁃ Forklifts are engineered based on certain principles of design and operation, those being : centre of gravity; stability triangle and load centre.

⁃ Before use, a competent operator must perform a visual and operation check of the forklift

⁃ When the forklift is in motion there should be NO lifting, lowering or tilting.

is back and better than ever with more

This week, Safety Sky is all about the safety features of a skid steer.

- Seat bar : provides a secondary restraint system, the seat belt must ALWAYS be worn as the primary restraint. The seat bar doubles as an arm rest to reduce arm fatigue.

- Lift-Arm Bypass : In the event of a power loss, the lift arms can be manually lowered using the red bypass valve located by the seat on the right hand side.

- Lift-Arm Locks : This device is used to hold the lift arms in the raised position for some maintenance procedures. If the operator is required to exit the machine with the arms raised, they MUST be locked in place

is back at it again with more

This week Safety Sky is coming in hot with some about Overhead Cranes!

- Overhead Crane Operator's must always know where the electrical breaker is for the crane that they operate in the event of an emergency.

- A "side load" occurs when the hoist rope does not remain vertical under the hoist as a load is raised. This can often result is the load swinging as it leaves the floor and can easily cause damage to the crane.

- The capacity of the overhead crane dictates the length of training. An overhead crane with a capacity of 5 tonnes or greater requires a combination of theory and practical training totalling 40 hours.
