So many herbs, seeds, proteins, fruits and on and on are suggested to “help” or aid in our health. But how to work all this into a daily diet. All these items in the picture are in a smoothie or porridge bowl that I have 4-5 times a week. A nice way to add a pinch of this and spoon of that.
This smoothie has
- protein powder (either whey or vegan)
- seeds: chia, flax, pumpkin, sesame, h**p
- herbs: ashwagandha, licorice root, triphala, maca
- coconut pieces or coconut oil
- liquids: coconut kefir, non-dairy milk, cranberry juice
- fruit: lots of berries, apple
This makes an excellent breakfast smoothie.
I measure out 14 servings of dry items at a time. Then blend up a double batch of fruit, liquids and dry items and store in fridge.
It actually tastes good and I know I am getting micro nutrients from a variety of food.

The makings of nutrient packed green smoothie!
Using organic and locally grown ingredients if possible
Water vegetable like cucumber and/or celery (hydration straight to the cells and lots of antioxidants). About a 1/4 -1/2 cucumber or 2-4 stocks celery
Leafy greens -spinach, kale, arugula, chard, mixes. These are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Phytonutrients enhance all our cells. Use about 2cups. I keep mine frozen so use about 1cup frozen.
Healthy oil - 1/4 avocado (can also be frozen), or tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil
Herbs - choose a handful from one or more of parsley (antioxidants, vitamin K for blood quality, minerals like calcium and iron) or cilantro (lowers blood sugar, immune health, anti-inflammatory)
Micro greens - such as powdered spurulina, or chorella, pea shoots etc. these add a punch of trace minerals such as potassium, iron, zinc, iodine, copper
Ginger - a little chunk of ginger for digestive health and flavor
Green apple - for flavor and also the digestive benefits from pectin and fiber
Bone broth - add a tablespoon of powdered bone broth .
Water - filtered (no chlorine) - I add about a cup to make it thinner
Blend in high speed blender
I do two batches at a time as these keep in fridge. I also freeze most of the ingredients ahead of time.

What better way than a smoothie to get all those micro nutrients and variety in one serving.
The current thinking is 12-18 servings of vegetables and fruit a day. That’s 6-9cups.
What better way than a smoothie.
For 5 days a week I have a smoothie for breakfast and a green smoothie for lunch or afternoon snack. They are packed full of vegetables, herbs, fruit and more. In coming posts I’ll write about the ingredients.
