If you are wondering where I’ve been well I have been so busy! I’ve joined the Stapleford Team! I have been loving seeing seniors for rehab, seeing clients for splinting, doing school consults, and seeing children in the Weyburn clinic for therapy. I have closed my Successability business and am full time with Stapleford. So please like Stapleford Health and Rehab Centre Occupational Therapy to follow me and what I will be doing! This will be mostly for my Weyburn and area families to build this new caseload! Please share with anyone you know with children in the Weyburn area (or grandparents as you know, I love grandparents as much as I love working with children)
Thanks so much for all of your continued support!

I am so excited to have gotten the SSP. The more I read about both clinical successes and randomized control trials with good evidence to support people are shown to have decreased anxiety, increased social skills and social awareness, decreased pain, etc. Etc. It’s great for all ages. If you know of someone who may need a reset of their sensory system so they can better reach goals and learn, please contact me.

Children have such different ways of responding to being over-stressed. Some get physically ill. Some get nervous and anxious. Some become manic and hyperactive. Some have trouble going to sleep and others don’t want to do anything but sleep. Some won’t say a word and others won’t stop talking...

At the Saskatchewan Society of Occupational Therapy’s AGM I listened to 2 respected colleagues present on a listening system known as the Safe and Sound Protocal. Having used this as part of their therapy interventions and seeing major functional improvements in individuals with sensory processing difficulties, auditory hypersensitivities, anxiety, autism, chronic pain, selective mutism, hyperactivity, executive function deficits and more. I was so excited to learn about how effective they have found this tool, so I started the training program today! I’m 1/3 if the way through the first part and am so excited to be learning the theory behind this Listening system! Let me know if you want to know more! I will be ordering the system once I get my certification.

The blog post below summarizes why we would use the Allen Cognitive Levels lacing task along with the routine task inventory to get a good understanding of where an individual is functioning at and how much support they need.

The routine task inventory is a free download.

Often the administration and scoring of higher level patients is a challenge. For one, these are individuals who are typically independent in routine ADLs.

I love this idea! So many people do not respond to verbal curing during a transfer when they have been in the hospital for a while and can’t find their midline. This gives such a great cue! Fellow RGH therapists have a look, we are gonna try this next week!

Grab 3 items from your rehab gym & get to work helping your patients with Parkinson's Disease that fall backward (retropulsion) during functional transfers.

Sensory integration therapy in this study is meeting children’s goals then traditional ABA. This is using a whole body approach to work on the underlying systems versus a cognitive approach to teach specific skills.

Researchers want to see whether a lesser-used approach lets children in a study better process sounds, sights and smells from everyday life.
