This year has brought about a million situations that require you to develop a "new normal." When Thanksgiving rolls around, that could mean not indulging in such an overflowing spread of food; it's just not necessary. Keeping your menu restricted to five items — maybe they're your classic main dish, your two favorite sides, and your two most delicious desserts — can trim the amount of money spent. Plus, you'll be left with a manageable amount of leftovers instead of heaps that'll eventual go bad and need to be tossed.

If you do decide to have a few people over in addition to those already in your household, take the pressure off of yourself by hosting a potluck. You can still keep the menu small, but by hosting a potluck (only with those that you trust, of course), you'll be able to appease everyone's taste buds without being left to do all of the cooking or cleaning up yourself. Make sure everyone's following proper coronavirus protocol when prepping their assigned dish.

Since the impact of COVID-19 has prevented many people from being able to travel as they normally would during the holidays, being able to enjoy dishes from other countries has been restricted, too. That doesn't mean, however, that you can't bring the culture to your own kitchen. Whether you're craving French cuisine, impressive Indian meals, or even some good ol' southern dishes, there are plenty of flavorful menus you can create for your guests to deliver something totally unexpected.

Here are the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic in the Greater Toronto Area.

Canada’s largest school district is moving hundreds of elementary school teachers from in-person to online classes.

The Toronto District School Board says the changes, which take effect next week, are meant to balance out the ratio of students to teachers across the system.

The board says there are about 63,000 students taking part in online classes — more than anticipated — and some have yet to be assigned a teacher.

A North York Catholic school is temporarily closed after a staff member who is also assigned to four other schools in the board tested positive for COVID-19.

St. Charles Catholic School on Claver Avenue will stay closed until Oct. 9, the Toronto Catholic District School Board wrote in a tweet late Sunday.

The decision was made in consultation with Toronto Public Health, the board added.

According to the board's COVID-19 dashboard, the staff member who tested positive also works at St. Demetrius Catholic School, St. Mark Catholic School, St. Roch Catholic School, and St. Ursula Catholic School.

As of last Friday, a total of 318 schools across Ontario had reported at least one confirmed case of COVID-19 in students or staff.

Most Toronto residents who are tested for COVID-19 are now waiting more than two days for the results, prompting Toronto Public Health to move one of the key indicators on its monitoring dashboard into the red for the first time in months.

Toronto Public Health tells CP24 that 77 per cent of residents were receiving test results within 48 hours as recently as Sept. 21 but that number has since dropped to 44 per cent amid reports of massive lines at assessment centres and an increasing processing backlog in the province’s labs.

As a result, Toronto Public Health has downgraded its laboratory testing indicator from yellow to red, suggesting that the area is “in need of attention.” It is the first time since the spring that one of the four key indicators tracked by Toronto Public Health have been in the red.

The Toronto District School Board said Sunday that public health officials have declared an outbreak at Mason Road Junior Public School, in Scarborough, and ordered that it be closed until Friday, Oct. 2, while they investigate. It is the first school to be closed in Toronto due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Toronto’s first school outbreak was declared at Friday at Glen Park Public School, where two students tested positive. As of Sunday evening, a total of 37 public schools across Toronto were reporting infections among students or staff, or both.

As Canada grapples with rising novel coronavirus numbers, experts say mounting evidence points to young people as the driving force behind the spike in cases.

The data doesn’t lie. The latest available data from the Public Health Agency of Canada showed 56.6 per cent of those who tested positive for the virus were younger than 50 years old.

People aged 20-29 accounted for “the largest proportion of cases,” the agency said in its weekly epidemiology report.

In order to successfully navigate through a second wave, federal and provincial governments were going to need to step up their testing, open more COVID-19 assessment centres and stock up on ventilators and personal protective equipment.
