After several years working in infection control in a continuing care setting — supporting patients who need ongoing, long-term medical care — Latha was ready for her next step.

“When an opportunity opened at Mackenzie Health, I knew it was the right place to grow my skills in a fast-paced hospital environment.”

Today, she helps prevent the spread of infections across the hospital, supporting care teams, strengthening safety practices and leading improvements that protect patients, families, staff and volunteers. Her work includes initiatives to reduce serious infections like certain bloodstream infections and pneumonia, helping to prevent harm and keeping patients safe.

“I’m grateful to be part of the Mackenzie Health family and to help create a safe environment for everyone.”

Our Emergency Departments and Urgent Care Centre (9401 Jane St.) are here to help you when you or your loved ones are in need on Family Day.

🚨 Emergency Department: If you’re facing life-threatening conditions like chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms or major injuries, head straight to the Emergency Department. These situations require immediate, advanced medical care.

🩹 Urgent Care Centre: For non-life-threatening issues like minor fractures, sprains, infections or moderate cuts, our Urgent Care Centre is the best choice. It’s ideal for after-hours care when your doctor’s office is closed but the situation isn’t an emergency.

Remember: if it’s life-threatening, don’t hesitate – call 911 or head to your closest Emergency Department.

On Family Day, our Urgent Care Centre hours are:

Feb. 16: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Looking for non-urgent care? Visit the Health 811: https://health811.ontario.ca/static/guest/home

After a 35-year career as a Health and Safety Manager with a local school board, Corrado wasn’t ready to slow down — he was ready to give back in a new way.

Today, as a GPS volunteer at Mackenzie Health — someone who greets visitors, answers questions and personally guides patients and families through the hospital — Corrado is often one of the first friendly faces people meet. Whether helping people find their way to appointments or supporting them on their journey home, he brings calm, reassurance and a steady presence during moments that can feel overwhelming. One of his favourite parts of volunteering? Working alongside “wonderful, dedicated volunteers who regularly go beyond the call of duty.”

A long-time Vaughan resident, Corrado and his family have experienced care at Mackenzie Health firsthand. “We were always treated with great care and compassion,” he says. “As a volunteer, I want to make sure everyone I meet feels that same care.”

Thank you, Corrado, for the kindness, comfort and community spirit you share with our patients every day.

On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we proudly recognize the women who are advancing science, transforming patient care and inspiring the next generation of innovators.

Meet Jennifer, Clinical Biochemist at Mackenzie Health. She works as a scientific consultant to laboratory professionals and clinical teams as she supports test selection, ensures quality standards, interprets complex results and troubleshoots unexpected findings. She also helps shape the future of laboratory services by developing reference intervals, guiding test use and overseeing point‑of‑care testing.

What drives her most is collaboration, mentorship and discovery. Nearly every area of the hospital relies on laboratory testing, giving her the opportunity to work with diverse health care teams.

Jennifer shares this message for young women and girls considering a future in STEM: “Surround yourself with positive, supportive and inspiring people. Your environment profoundly shapes your growth. Seek mentors and colleagues that uplift and encourage you.”

During Recreation Therapy Month, we recognize patients who engage in recreation therapy as part of their healing, recovery and wellness journey and the staff who support them.

Recreation therapy supports patients across Mackenzie Health by helping them stay connected to who they are while working toward their recovery goals. Whether patients are adjusting to long hospital stays, rebuilding skills after a stroke or strengthening coping strategies in mental health programs, therapeutic activities play a meaningful role in their healing.

From movement‑based programs and creative expression to hands‑on skill‑building and social connection, recreation therapy promotes confidence, emotional regulation, wellness and a renewed sense of purpose. Across all units, these activities offer structure, hope, and moments of joy during challenging times.

No matter the unit, recreation therapy is rooted in supporting patients in feeling capable, connected and empowered throughout their recovery.

The 2026 Winter Olympics have begun, and we’re cheering on Team Canada!

To celebrate, we asked Simon, Program Technician at the Centre for Behaviour Health Sciences, and former Disney on Ice performer, what inspired his love of the ice and how he stays active throughout winter.

“I started skating at six after my parents nudged me away from the arcade games I played at the rink while my sister was skating, and it was the best decision.”

Growing up in England, staying active on and off the ice helped him stay energized through the rainy winters. Now in snowy Canada, he keeps moving by snowshoeing, walking the Simcoe Forest Trail with his family and dog, helping coach his son’s hockey team and getting outside whenever he can.

His advice for staying active this winter season:

- Build snowmen and snow forts
- Walk indoor arena tracks or around the mall
- Enjoy trails, rinks and fresh air

As the world’s best compete at the Olympics, let’s find our own ways to move, play and stay well this winter.

Cheering on your team in the Super Bowl this weekend doesn’t have to mean sidelining your healthy habits.

Mahsa Gharegozlo, Mackenzie Health Registered Dietitian, shares nutritious swaps to make nachos packed with flavour and fibre:

👉 Whole‑grain tortilla chips for extra fibre and crunch

👉 Lean protein like black beans, grilled chicken or seasoned ground turkey

👉 Plenty of colourful veggies including tomatoes, peppers, corn, jalapeños and green onions

👉 A lighter cheese option such as part‑skim mozzarella or a small sprinkle of a strong cheese for big flavour

👉 Healthy fats like avocado slices or a dollop of Greek‑yogurt guacamole

👉 Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for added protein

These nachos are delicious, satisfying and balanced — so you can enjoy the big game without the post‑snack slump.

Five years ago today, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital opened its doors — and Mackenzie Health became a two-hospital system.

At the height of the pandemic, we opened differently than planned to support Ontario’s COVID-19 response, caring for more than 500 patients transferred from hospitals across the GTA before becoming a full-service community hospital in June 2021.

This milestone belongs to the staff, physicians and volunteers who stepped up, and to the government and community partners and donors who supported us every step of the way.

We’re proud of what we’ve built together — and inspired by the future of care we continue to shape for our communities.

Watch this video for a look back at our opening day.

With winter weather still in full swing, it’s important to take proper care of our bodies while snow shovelling, especially for people living with heart conditions. Staying mindful, pacing yourself and listening to your body can make a big difference during these colder months.

Snow shovelling puts extra strain on the heart by combining two major stressors: heavy physical effort and cold temperatures. This can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to rise sharply. Cold air also tightens blood vessels, increasing blood pressure and making the heart work even harder.

“Patients with known heart disease or coronary stents should talk with their cardiologist before considering snow shovelling,” says Dr. Alexander Crystal, Head of the Division of Cardiology at Mackenzie Health. “In many cases, hiring help or using a snow blower is the safer choice.”

When shovelling, take frequent breaks. Listen to your body and stop if you feel tired or short of breath. If you feel chest discomfort, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness or nausea, be sure to stop shovelling immediately and seek medical attention.
