Here’s something you should never, ever do:

A few years ago, Dr. Kim had a major surgery after his elbow bone was shattered. On Wednesday, August 19, 2009, our lives were forever altered. Joshua was only 14 months old when we discovered he had diabetes. The initial shock was realizing he would need injections for the rest of his life. Then came the overwhelming guilt, feeling as though it was somehow our fault.

The early days were incredibly tough. Joshua was hospitalized, connected to insulin and glucose drips, and subjected to hourly blood tests. His tiny toes were sore and scabbed from the frequent pricks. With all the wires and needles, we couldn’t even hold him properly.

We were immediately trained to administer injections. My husband and I practiced on each other, which was a terrible experience. Joshua would scream and cry every time, too young to understand why we were causing him pain.
