Today A Niu would like to share a classical but rare case - Demodex infection

Demodex (demodectic mange) is caused by mites that normally live on a dog’s skin. Most dogs stay healthy — problems happen when the immune system can’t keep the mites in check.

What it looks like
Patchy hair loss (often around eyes, muzzle, legs)
Red, scaly skin
Odor or crusting if infection develops
Usually not very itchy unless there’s a secondary infection

Who gets it
Puppies: small, round bald spots that often clear on their own
Adults: may signal an underlying issue (hormonal disease, cancer, stress, malnutrition)

Is it contagious?
❌ Not contagious to people
❌ Not contagious to other adult dogs
✔️ Puppies get mites only from their mom shortly after birth

Treatment
Modern flea/tick meds (isoxazolines like Simparica, NexGard, Bravecto) are highly effective

Treat secondary infections if present

Avoid immune‑suppressing meds like steroids or Apoquel

Prognosis
Localized cases: excellent
Generalized cases: good with proper treatment
Adult-onset: depends on finding the underlying cause

常見症狀有:

哪些狗容易得？
幼犬： 小範圍掉毛，多數可自行痊癒
成犬： 可能代表免疫力問題（賀爾蒙疾病、腫瘤、壓力、營養不良等）

會傳染嗎？
❌ 不會傳染給人
❌ 不會傳染給其他成犬
✔️ 幼犬只會在出生後不久從母犬身上獲得蟎蟲

治療方式
新一代跳蚤壁蝨藥（如 Simparica、NexGard、Bravecto）效果非常好,但若有細菌感染需同時治療

避免使用會抑制免疫的藥物（如類固醇、Apoquel）

預後通常非常好,但嚴重的全身感染需要較長時間的治療
成犬發病：需找出背後的免疫或內科疾病

狗的創傷性眼球突出（Traumatic Proptosis in Dogs）

Traumatic proptosis refers to displacement of the globe beyond the eyelid margins following external trauma. The eyelids become trapped behind the globe, resulting in exposure, vascular compromise, and potential extraocular muscle avulsion. It is considered an ophthalmic emergency requiring immediate intervention.

Common cause include:
• Dog fights or dog–cat altercations
• Motor vehicle trauma, falls, blunt head injury
• Brachycephalic breeds predisposed due to shallow orbits

Clinical sign:
• Globe protrusion with inability to blink
• Corneal desiccation, ulceration, exposure keratopathy
• Marked conjunctival edema or hemorrhage
• Extraocular muscle avulsion (commonly medial re**us)
• Optic nerve stretching or transection

Treatments include:
1. Globe Replacement + Temporary Tarsorrhaphy
Indicated when the globe remains viable, the cornea is intact, and the optic nerve is not severely compromised. Under general anesthesia, the globe is lubricated, repositioned, and protected with temporary tarsorrhaphy.

2. For more severe case, may need to do Enucleation
Recommended when the globe is ruptured, the optic nerve is transected, multiple extraocular muscles are avulsed, or vascular supply is lost. Enucleation prevents chronic pain and infection.

• 視神經牽拉或斷裂

治療選項
1. 眼球復位與暫時性瞼縫合
適用於眼球仍具血供、角膜完整、視神經未完全損傷者。
在全麻下以潤滑後復位，並以部分瞼縫合保護眼球。

2. 眼球摘除術
若眼球破裂、視神經斷裂、多條眼外肌撕裂或無血供，建議直接摘除以避免疼痛與感染。

這個case在經過治療後,我們保留了這顆眼睛,目前正在逐漸恢復當中

Aural(ear) hematoma in a dog is essentially a pool of blood trapped under the skin or within tissue, most often caused by ruptured small blood vessels(scratching or shaking the head).

Common signs
• Soft, fluid‑filled swelling
• Ear looks puffy, warm, or painful
• Often linked to ear infections, allergies, or injury

Will it heal on its own?
• Small ones may absorb
• Ear hematomas rarely heal well alone and can lead to a “cauliflower ear”

What treatment involves
• Draining or surgical stabilization
• Treating the underlying cause (ear infection, allergies, parasites)
• Pain and inflammation control

When to see a vet
• Rapid swelling
• Significant pain or heat
• Bad smell or discharge
• Low energy or worsening symptoms

This 8‑year‑old Golden Retriever came to us after a few days of not eating and feeling very low in energy. Tests showed severe anemia and low platelets, and he was eventually brought to A Niu for further care.
After discussing the options with his family, we proceeded with a splenectomy to give him the best chance of recovery.
He did great after surgery and is now back home resting comfortably — ready to enjoy life and keep going strong for many more years.

🐶 Splenectomy in Dogs - A splenectomy is the surgical removal of the spleen. It’s a common and often life‑saving procedure for dogs, especially when the spleen is bleeding or has developed a mass.

Why a Dog Might Need a Splenectomy
• Splenic masses (benign or malignant)
• Internal bleeding (hemoabdomen)
• Splenic torsion
• Trauma‑related rupture
Even benign masses can rupture and cause dangerous bleeding, so surgery is often recommended.

🩺 What the Spleen Does
The spleen helps filter blood and support the immune system, but dogs can live normal lives without it. Other organs take over its functions.

One of the most common emergencies we see in veterinary medicine is the gastrointestinal (GI) foreign body, which happens when a dog swallows something that can’t safely pass through the digestive tract.

Common Culprits
• Socks, underwear, gloves
• Toys or toy fragments
• Bones, corn cobs
• String, fabric, hair ties
• Rocks, sticks
Even “small” items can cause big problems once they reach the stomach or intestines.

Signs Your Dog May Have Swallowed Something
• Vomiting or retching
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Abdominal pain or restlessness

Today, A Niu would like to introduce a case of amputation in dogs

⭐ When amputation is considered
Amputation is typically recommended when it provides a better quality of life than attempting to save a limb. Common indications include:
• Severe trauma
(e.g., crushed limb, non-reconstructable fractures, degloving injuries)
• Malignant tumors
Most commonly osteosarcoma in large-breed dogs
• Severe infection
When tissue viability is lost or infection is uncontrollable
• Neurologic dysfunction
Non-functional limb causing trauma or chronic pain
• Vascular compromise
Limb ischemia that cannot be reversed
In many cases, amputation is less painful, less risky, and more humane than prolonged attempts at salvage.

⭐ How dogs adapt
Dogs—especially medium to large breeds—adapt far better than most owners expect.
• Most walk comfortably within 24–72 hours.
• Full functional adaptation often occurs within 2–4 weeks.
• Front-leg amputations are biomechanically harder than hind-leg ones, but still very manageable for most dogs.

⭐ What the surgery involves
A typical limb amputation is:
• Performed under general anesthesia
• Completed in 45–90 minutes, depending on location and complexity
• Usually done at the scapulothoracic, coxofemoral, or mid-femur/humerus level (Disarticulation is preferred over leaving partial limbs that can cause pressure sores.)
Pain control is multimodal: opioids, NSAIDs, local blocks, and sometimes gabapentin.

⭐ Recovery and aftercare
Most dogs go home within 24 hours.
At home:
• Keep the incision clean and dry
• Prevent licking (e-collar or medical shirt)
• Restrict activity for 10–14 days
• Use non-slip flooring or mats
• Support with a sling for the first few days if needed
Complications to watch for:
• Seroma formation
• Incisional infection
• Phantom limb sensations (rare but possible)
• Difficulty rising or slipping early on

For this case, is a 7kg Eskimo Dog Mix dog, with R front leg elbow tumor. Through biopsy, confirms soft tissue sarcoma. After discussion with the owner, decides to perform amputation surgery .

The patient recovers well, can walk and has goos appetite within 48 hours.

當患肢已經造成疼痛、無法使用，或保肢手術風險更高時，獸醫會建議截肢，例如：
• 嚴重創傷（壓碎、無法重建的骨折、皮膚撕脫）
• 惡性腫瘤（大型犬常見骨肉瘤）

在 48 小時內就能走路、精神佳、食慾也很好。

三腳狗狗依然可以快樂生活，只要疼痛被解除，牠們往往比我們更堅強。

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and often life‑threatening viral disease in dogs, especially puppies. It causes severe gastrointestinal illness, rapid dehydration, and can be fatal without prompt veterinary care.

CPV Is
• A highly contagious virus that spreads through infected f***s and contaminated environments.
• Primarily affects puppies 6–20 weeks old, but unvaccinated adults can also get sick.
• Causes acute hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and sometimes myocarditis in very young pups.
• The virus mutates quickly, leading to new variants that continue to circulate globally.

How It Spreads
• Direct contact with infected dogs
• Contact with contaminated surfaces (floors, soil, shoes, bowls, hands)
• The virus survives for months in the environment and is resistant to many disinfectants.

Clinical Signs
Common symptoms include:
• Severe vomiting
• Profuse, often bloody diarrhea
• Lethargy, fever, anorexia
• Rapid dehydration
• Abdominal pain

Any puppy with these signs should be treated as an emergency.

Treatment
There is no antiviral cure, but aggressive supportive care dramatically improves survival:
• IV fluids and electrolyte correction
• Antiemetics
• Antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infection
• Nutritional support
• Isolation to prevent spread
• Some clinics now use monoclonal antibody therapy, which may improve outcomes.

Prevention
• Vaccination is extremely effective and the best protection.
• Puppies need a series of vaccines every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old.
• Avoid dog parks or unknown dogs until fully vaccinated.
• Use bleach (1:30 dilution) to disinfect contaminated areas.

ANVH EP-80 Silent killer - tumor rupture 沉默的殺手 - 腫瘤破裂

Over the past few weeks, A Niu has handled three emergency surgeries caused by ruptured tumors — two in the spleen and one in the liver. All three were senior dogs over 10 years old.

Their owners said the same thing: “They were totally fine… then suddenly collapsed.”

When they arrived, the dogs had low blood pressure, pale gums, and signs of internal bleeding.

Ultrasound scans revealed large abdominal masses with active hemorrhage.

These are true life‑or‑death moments. Surgery has to happen
immediately to find the bleeding source and remove the tumor if possible. But not every patient is fortunate enough to make it through such a critical event.

Afterward, many owners ask how they can prevent this from happening. The honest answer is: regular health check‑ups.

Tumors don’t grow big or rupture overnight. By the time symptoms appear, the tumor has usually been developing silently for months.

Prevention will always be better than emergency treatment.

If your dog or cat shows signs like weight loss, a growing belly, pale gums, or sudden collapse, please seek your family vet right away.

阿牛在這幾周內接到了3例腫瘤破裂的緊急手術,2例是脾臟1例是肝臟,都是年>10歲的老狗,主訴都是本來好好的,突然倒下站不起來(血壓低),黏膜蒼白(內出血),所以送來醫院

經檢查後發現腹腔有大的團塊,經超音波確診為腫瘤+內出血

這是和死神拔河的緊急手術,必須馬上開刀找到出血點跟評估腫瘤摘除,但不是每個病患都這麼幸運地可以被搶救回來

術後主人問該怎麼樣可以避免這個狀況? 我想了想只有定期的健康檢查才有辦法預防,腫瘤不會一夕之間長到這麼大或者馬上破裂,要到發生臨床症狀了通常都要至少幾個月以上的時間,只能說預防甚於治療

如果你的貓狗有類似的症狀(體重下降,腹圍變大,黏膜蒼白,無法站例等等),請盡速就醫

Today, A Niu would like to introduce a case of Radius and ulna fracture in dogs

🐶 Radius & Ulna Fractures in Dogs are among the most common forelimb fractures, especially in small‑breed dogs. Because the radius is the primary weight‑bearing bone, fractures here significantly affect mobility.

Why These Fractures Happen
1. Small‑breed dogs (toy breeds) Very poor blood supply to the distal radius, making it fragile and slow to heal, so even minor trauma (jumping off furniture, falling from arms) can cause a fracture
2. Larger dogs
Require significant trauma (HBC, falls, gunshot injuries) to fracture the radius/ulna
3. Typical fracture patterns
Both bones usually break together
Distal diaphyseal fractures are especially common in small breeds

Clinical Signs
Sudden non‑weight‑bearing lameness/Swelling of the limb/Pain on palpation/Crepitus or instability (often obvious because of minimal soft tissue coverage)

Diagnosis
Radiographs (2 views minimum) to evaluate fracture type: transverse, oblique, comminuted, open vs closed

Treatment Options
⭐ Surgical Repair (Gold Standard)
Especially critical in toy breeds, where external coaptation has an 80%+ nonunion rate.
