Terra Nova Midwifery Holiday Hampers 🧺

Dearest Community:

We’re gathering donations for a few of our families this holiday, who could use some extra support this season. If you’re in a position to give, we’re putting together holiday hampers with essentials and a few treats to help make the season feel a little lighter.

We’re collecting:
    •    Gift cards (groceries, gas, Walmart, Superstore, etc.)
    •    Cash or e-transfer donations

Every donation, big or small, makes a real difference. Our community has always shown up with so much heart, and we’re grateful for your generosity.

If you’d like to contribute, please drop off items at the clinic during open hours or send us a message to arrange a time.

Thank you for helping us support our families this holiday season! 🫶🏻

The dreamiest lighting at a recent home water birth 🌌

Did you know that darkness isn’t just comforting, it can help your hormones in labour?

Dim lighting helps oxytocin (the hormone that powers contractions and bonding) release by:

-reducing stress & sympathetic activation
-increasing melatonin, which amplifies oxytocin and works with it to strengthen & coordinate labour
-enhancing feelings of safety & privacy
-supporting instinctive labour physiology

A quiet, cozy, cave-like space isn’t just ambiance, it’s physiology. Creating a dimly lit environment can protect the hormones that support your birth.

A special discharge visit for this sweet gal who completed the Mitchell family. Three babies, one growing family, and years of shared trust.

These visits are always bittersweet, what a gift to care for them here at Terra Nova Midwifery!

A few weeks ago, midwives Nancy & Jenny attended a retirement celebration for our dear colleague, Dr. Helen Robson OBGYN & her husband, Dr. Houston!

What a fantastic night honouring and celebrating their years of service in our community, and at Richmond Hospital.

Dr. Robson has always been an incredible collaborator, skilled surgeon, vaginal breech birth champion & wonderful comrade. We loved hearing stories about the countless lives she’s touched—patients, families and colleagues alike. Including RN Gina who got into character from the patient’s perspective (dressing up as a v***a lol) and presenting an award acknowledging Helen’s steadfast work in vaginal breech birth.

Wishing Dr. Robson & Dr. Houston all the best in this next chapter—may it be filled with rest, adventure, and unlimited time on the sailboat without needing to get back for a call shift.

Thank you Dr. Robson, we will miss you! 🤍

Midwifery Care Series
Part 3: Postpartum 🩺🏠

Postpartum is a period of adjustment for everyone – families and newborns alike. Midwives typically provide postpartum care for newborns until the baby is 6 weeks old. During this time, the midwife may visit the family in their home or have them come into a community-based clinic (here Terra Nova Midwifery, we offer both)!

Midwives will work closely with the family to ensure there is a schedule for postpartum visits, often providing more frequent visits in the first few weeks after birth.

This is a time when midwives are assessing how the family and newborn are doing, can assist with infant feeding, and provide connection and referral to other specialized healthcare providers if needed.

To learn more or request postpartum-only midwifery care—visit our website: terranovamidwifery.com. We serve families living in South Delta and Richmond, BC.

Every year Butterfly Support Network hosts a run in Vancouver to bring families, friends and supporters together. It’s an opportunity to honour, remember, and celebrate the babies we didn’t get to meet, passed, or left too soon in community.

Butterfly Support Network offers support programs throughout BC—including free counselling, support groups, peer support, bereavement resources, and community events—to ensure that no one navigates this journey alone.

Through these initiatives, they provide compassionate care at every stage of the journey, from acute grief to pregnancy after loss, and beyond.

A big thank you to for all of your contributions, creating such a special community, and offering invaluable resources.
