We had such a wonderful day celebrating our dear midwife Jessi before she welcomes her baby!

Nothing like getting a group of midwives and doulas together to fluff the nest, fill the freezer & install a car seat.

Congratulations, Jessi—we’re so excited for you!

Midwife Hania knitting at a recent home birth. This photo means so much to us and is symbolic to how we choose to provide care and practice at TNM.

There’s a long and tender history of knitting at births. For generations, midwives kept their hands busy while they kept watch. The rhythm of click and pull that mirrored the rhythm of a birth unfolding. Knitting was never distraction; it was presence. A way to stay grounded, attentive, and calm. The steady movement signalled patience. Trust. Time.

At the roots of midwifery, the sentiment of a midwife knowing when to sit on their hands, or if a midwife was knitting in the corner, was a great sign that the birth was going well.

In homes across centuries, midwives stitched booties, blankets, and small garments while waiting for new life to arrive reflective of birth unfolding in its own careful pattern.

Over the years, and with the medicalization of birth, a lot of traditional ways and practices like knitting at births have been criticized or lost, considered professional or unnecessary.

We also have loads of charting, home visits, and other competing tasks to triage while being on-call.

Today, Hania carries this quiet tradition forward. Calm hands, soft focus and trust in the process and story being woven. We are so proud to be carrying these ways forward when time and space allow. 🧶✨
