Great tip from Here’s an awesome little hack to help you clear a clogged milk duct 🍼 Simply fill the Haakaa with warm water (just enough so that you’re still able to attach it... about 3T)and a tablespoon of Epsom salt and attach it to the affected breast. The combination of warm water, Epsom salt, and suction should pull out the clog. If it doesn’t work on the first try, you can keep trying up to four times a day until the clog has cleared. If you struggle with clogged ducts, give this a try and let me know if it works for you 🤱

Let's have another conversation about informed consent. When I make a recommendation to a patient it is my medical opinion, it is me following guidelines, it is my recommendation for the sake of their health. It is NOT required. If someone shows me that they understand my reasoning, they understand the risks and the benefits of accepting AND declining my recommendation, and they still elect to decline, that is all I need to know. I will never (and no provider ever should) withhold care, prescriptions, or kindness based on that. I will never coerce or insist, I will never imply that something is necessary. If your provider does, report them. This goes for decisions during pregnancy, about pregnancy, abortion, birth, etc. you are not an incubator. Feel free to DM me for more help reporting a provider.

Corona Virus UPDATE from Richmond Hospital:

To limit the possible spread of virus at the Birth Centre and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) the number of visitors coming to see families has been limited.

For labour, birth & postpartum: 1 other adult (doulas are being considered medical personnel and do not count as your 1 visitor)

For prenatal appointments such as NST's, Assessment or Consultations: 1 other adult

For NICU: 2 adult caregivers (normally the parents)

Please note this must also be the SAME visitor throughout your stay - eg no swapping in grandma for grandpa to count as the one visitor.

Please remember that anyone with possible symptoms of the virus or a travel history in the past 14 days (especially to Japan, Korea, Iran, Italy, China) in the past 14 days should NOT be visiting you or your family.

We know these measures are going to impact families. However, we want to remind everyone that precautions like these are all we can do right now to protect babies, families and our health care professionals.

Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

As per Pacific Midwidery Group

Dear Pacific Families,

We know you are hearing lots of information about the Corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic. We want to reassure you that as your care providers we are doing our best to take measures to help limit the potential spread of the virus and are engaged with the College of Midwives, BC Women’s Hospital, St Paul’s Hospital and our Health Authorities to keep current on information.

In our practice, we are asking anyone who has recently travelled to Iran, Korea, Japan, China or Italy, anyone with symptoms of corona virus (fever, cough with difficulty breathing) or anyone who has had direct contact with someone who is known to have corona virus PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE CLINIC. Please call to advise us of your situation so we can make appropriate arrangements. If you are ill, we urge you to see your family physician, or contact a public health nurse by calling 8-1-1 to get advice about how to be assessed. DO NOT show up at a healthcare facility such as a doctor's office or hospital ER without first phoning ahead.

We are doing our best to prevent transmission of virus by not seeing high-risk clients, thorough disinfection of medical devices and furniture between client visits and regularly disinfecting common surfaces such as the waiting room, washroom, doorknobs, pens etc. We will also be putting away toys and leaflets in our clinic as these are difficult to clean between client appointments. We would also like to request that you not bring unnecessary family members or friends to your appointments at this time (you and your partner are necessary).

At this time, it is believed that the virus is mostly spread through respiratory droplet contact with an infected person much the same way influenza is spread. With droplet transmission, virus released in the respiratory secretions when a person with infection coughs, sneezes or talks can infect another person IF it makes direct contact with the mucous membranes; infection can also occur if a person touches an infected surface and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. Droplets do not travel more than 2 metres and DO NOT linger in the air. Good hand washing, avoiding contact with known ill people, and avoiding touching of the face are all important ways to prevent transmission. Today it was also advised to avoid large group events and to cancel all unnecessary travel outside of Canada.

With regard to corona virus in pregnant women and babies, not much is known for certain at this time. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada has published a statement to say that transmission to babies in utero is very unlikely. Furthermore, separation of ill mothers from babies is NOT advised. Parents are advised that breastfeeding may be good protection for babies and should continue even if a mother is ill with corona virus.

We know that pregnancy can already be a time of anxiety and concern and that many of you may be struggling with the additional worry of this outbreak. We encourage you to practice caution but to keep your concern and reaction level appropriate to the actual situation.

For accurate and up-to-date information about the outbreak in our area, please ensure you access information from RELIABLE resources such as the BC CDC or Health Canada. Do not rely on media or social media as a source of information as there is no monitoring of the validity or accuracy of these sources.

We hope this helps to answer any questions,

Sincerely,
Pacific Midwifery

Why is my Pap smear abnormal?

We frequently get this question and thought we could provide some general insight.

First of all your abnormal pap does not mean you have cancer. 8% of all Pap tests done in Canada are abnormal but only 1400 (or 4.3% of abnormal paps) lead to a cervical cancer diagnosis.

So if it’s not cancer why else could be abnormal?

There are many reasons such as an infection or inflammation, (non cancerous) HPV, recent sexual activity, dysplasia, and changes in hormones among other things.

What happens if my pap is abnormal?

Depending on what type of abnormal and your pap history you may have to get more frequent paps or get a colposcopy to take a closer look at your cervix.
You can always talk to your doctor (or one of ours) about why your pap may be abnormal and what your next steps are.

Why should I get a pap if most abnormals are not cancer?

Because some are. Cervical cancer is significantly easier to treat if detected early and is nearly impossible to detect early without a pap.
Paps are simple, painless, and quick. You should get one starting at age 21 and continue once a year until you have had three normal paps in a row. After that you can continue screening every three years.

Is there a way to prepare for a pap?

Yes. It is recommend you do not have in*******se, do**he, use vaginal cleansers, or spermicide within two days of your pap because these things can wash away or obscure abnormal cells. You should also avoid getting paps while menstruating for this reason.

"Tansi my name is Jasmine Fox, I am Assiniboine from Mosquito GBHLMFN and treaty 6 and 4. I’m a stay-at-home mom with my son Khal and have been nourishing his body through mine for 11 months. I learned that it’s a process and takes a lot of patience, I’m glad I stuck with it. The bond, connection and energy is indescribable but the feeling is the best! Not only did my body grow and birth my son but it also provides nutrients to keep my baby strong and healthy. Motherhood is raw but it brings the best out of you, he makes me a better me! Together we are growing and learning."
