The following is a comment left on my original post by Avoidance disrupts basic relational accountability. In any kind of relationship—friendship, romantic, even professional—there’s an unspoken agreement that communication will be used to navigate changes. Avoidance breaks that agreement without explanation.
Avoidance triggers ambiguity distress. Humans are wired to look for closure. When someone disappears instead of saying “I’m not interested” or “I need space,” the other person is left to fill in the blanks. That often leads to rumination, self-doubt, and overanalysis (“Did I do something wrong?”), even when the issue had nothing to do with them.
It can reflect or reinforce avoidant coping. Avoiding uncomfortable conversations might feel easier in the short term, but it prevents people from building skills in conflict resolution, boundary-setting, and emotional tolerance. Over time, that pattern can damage multiple relationships—not just the one being ghosted.
There’s also a power imbalance piece. The person who disappears controls the narrative by withholding information, while the other person is left in a one-sided experience. That imbalance can feel dismissive or dehumanizing, especially if there was emotional investment.
