With the start of a new year, I’d like to touch on how I approach my clinical practice: I practice modern, evidence-based chiropractic focused on exercise, strength, and long-term self-management—not spinal ‘realignment.’ My goal is to help you move confidently, get stronger, and rely less on treatment over time.

I do not believe that spinal manipulation leads to better body health, but I am happy to refer you to those clinicians whose practices align with that model.

I do not believe that spinal manipulation “fixes” issues. I believe it is a tool in our toolkit that can be used to help modulate pain and temporarily restore joint motion, however it is only a bandaid when not coupled with education and loading strategies.

I have an undergraduate degree in kinesiology and a doctorate in chiropractic. That’s almost 10yrs of education focused on anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. Yes, I know how to treat your ankle sprain and shoulder impingement just as well as how I know to treat your chronic low back pain.

I am passionate about getting my patients moving again and enjoying their activities. My approach treats pain with education and tailored home care exercises. If you like physiotherapy, then you’ll appreciate my practice style.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2026!

I will probably die up on this soapbox, but this idea behind what chiropractors can and can’t do is the reality behind my career.
I love my job, but unfortunately fighting to educate people on what I actually do (assessment, diagnosis, targeted manual therapy and prescription of home care exercises… not just crack bones) takes up a large amount of time and energy.
If you have been a patient and have 2min to spare, a Google review would help me greatly!!

I must confess- I’m not all that into “traditional chiropractic.” Frankly the old rhetoric makes me cringe. A chiropractor can do more than just crack backs… it is akin to telling a physiotherapist that they can only do ultrasound and stim. Passive treatments that use modalities and manual therapy certainly have their place! I use various forms of manual therapy such as active release technique, cupping, IASTM and joint manipulation to help decrease soft tissue guarding, improve range of motion and to modulate pain. But all of these things are TEMPORARY! Active care is the solution.
If you are uncomfortable with joint manipulation, you can still see a chiropractor! Adjustments should not be the centre piece of your visit.

Active therapy >>> passive manual therapy

A common misconception is that *only* physiotherapists are able to give you home care exercises. Hence the popular term “physio exercises”. The age old quip from medical doctors stating “you should see a physio for that” is outdated and uninformed. All chiropractors are trained in rehabilitation and are able to prescribe exercises (no, I don’t mean stretches). Athletic therapists, personal trainers, kinesiologists and massage therapists can all give active care as part of their treatment. Does everyone do it? No! Should they? Well, that depends on their philosophy and personal style of practice.
I like to tell my patients that 99% of how they are going to improve is via their home exercise program. Sure, manual therapy gives us temporary relief and feels good, but the real change stems from strengthening and regaining mobility where needed- yup, the HEP!
To speak further to chiropractors: many of us practice in very different ways. Some offer 15min appointments, while others prefer 30-60min sessions. Some prefer joint manipulation, while others (like myself) tend to use it very minimally. If you are working with a chiropractor and aren’t getting home care exercises, then go see a different therapist who is able to offer you better active care if that is what you are looking for.
Who to see? Look for a therapist (DC, MScPT, RMT, BScKin, AT) that preferably has a kinesiology or athletic therapy background and has experience in the strength and conditioning field. Their actual credentials don’t matter! We all offer our own unique lens and approach to treatment… the best fit and style is the one that you respond to!
