It is with saddened hearts that the family of James Irving Wheaton of Point de Bute announce his death on Friday Jan 2, 2026. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife listening to recorded music of his brother’s band.
Born in Point de Bute, NB, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Florence (Anderson) Wheaton.
Jim graduated from Port Elgin Regional Memorial High School in 1960 and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1962. He kept in contact with many of his classmate friends.Jim was a lifelong farmer and dedicated his life to agriculture in NB and beyond. Over the years he selflessly served on many agricultural organizations, both local and provincial Soil and Crop Improvement associations, the Soil and Water Conservation of Canada Society and the Canadian Forage Council.
Although he operated both dairy and beef operations over the years, his main passion was planting and harvesting crops. Often when rain was in the forecast, he would run his seeder all night to get the crop in the ground. Winters would usually find Jim in the woods at Murray corner cutting logs and stove wood. Jim passed his work ethic on to both his children who farmed with him when they were young.
For many years Jim and Shirley danced with the Tantramar Twirlers square dance group, and made many good friends there. Jim had many health issues over the years but was very fortunate to have many good friends who were always there to help. He was always eager to stop work and talk to people.
Jim was predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Florence, and his sister Bertha Douglas (Robert).
He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 59 years, his two children Margaret Anne (Reynolds Sears) and Michael (Michelle), and his brother Roland (Louise). Extended family include: grand children Megan Butcher(Scott), Chelsey Wheaton (Logan Timmons), Daniel Wheaton(Breanne), and Stacy Fitch (Rob); great grand children Mason Parker, Rowan Fitch, Leo and Finley Wheaton; nieces Roberta Douglas, Rosemary MacEachen, and nephew Philip Wheaton.
Jim's arrangements are under the care and direction of the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB, (506 364 1300) where an Evening of Remembrance will take place on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 from 6 pm until 8 pm.
