Welcome to my last baby of 2023, and what a birth it was!! This first time mama was an absolute champion, and although not many births go exactly to plan, this one was pretty darn close. So happy for these sweet new parents and their precious new baby girl. What a way to end the year 🥰

Had the incredible honour of supporting a friend’s labour and birth yesterday, and it was truly a wild ride from start to finish. It seemed like November 21 was going to be the day, but I guess this nugget had her heart set on being a Sagittarius girl, and didn’t come out until the date had changed.

Happy birthday, sweet one, and happy Sagittarius season to all who celebrate 😘

A little late posting this one, but I was so honoured to support this sweet family through the belly birth of their newest member a couple weeks ago. Still in disbelief that I get to do this job!!

I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since I had the privilege of supporting this incredible family as they welcomed sweet Weston into the world. My first official doula birth, and one I will never ever forget. 🥹

It was a hard, beautiful, emotional, magical day, and I am in awe of having witnessed this warrior mama bring her beautiful daughter into the world. This one is definitely one I will never forget. 💓

Happy International Day of the Midwife!!

I was so fortunate to have midwives attend my last two births, and I cannot say enough good things. Oh how I wish everyone who wanted a midwife could get one, but unfortunately that is not even close to the case.

In my perfect world, every low-risk birth would be attended by a midwife, saving valuable OBGYN resources for emergent and high-risk situations that truly need them!

It’s an election month for Alberta so if you agree with me, more funding for midwifery is a great question to ask of your potential representatives!! 😘😘

Take the photos, mama.

I have said over and over again that there is nothing more beautiful than a pregnant body… except when it came to my own. Oh how hated this body when I was pregnant.

The extra roundness of my face, my swollen fingers and arms, the new stretch marks all over my belly and thighs….

Nevertheless, one night close to the end, I snapped this as I got out of the bath, fully intending that it would never see the light of day.

Now I could cry looking at the beauty of that body. Time and distance has given me such an appreciation for how marvellous I looked, and the gift that body gave me. But I couldn’t see it at the time. Bébé Harvey in there!! 🥹🥹🥹

So, if you take away nothing else from me, please take this: take the pictures, mama. Get the maternity photos done. Be uncomfortable in this moment so you can savour it down the line. Trust me. You’ll thank yourself later.

A pretty common concern I hear is that someone’s partner is hesitant about doula support because they’re worried a doula would take their place. Just like all concerns, this one is valid. However, I have yet to meet a partner who has had doula support who was anything but grateful for the extra set of hands.

I always say that as a doula, I am of course there primarily to support the birther. However, I am also there to support the partner as well. In the moment, that may look like “I’ve got this for the next 30 minutes—you go take a nap.” Or it can look like doing the heavy physical support, so that you can focus on being present with your partner in the hard moments.

Trust that doula support is so valuable for the WHOLE family. Let me do the hip squeezes, so you can connect face-to-face in the moments that matter most. ♥️
