Hi! I thought a reintroduction would be helpful after a long break from social media! I'm Nicole, a registered speech language pathologist and owner at Robertson SLP. Some new and exciting things are happening and I can't wait to share them all!

For now, I'd love to share some info about myself:
❤️ I am a mom to two busy boys age 5 and 7 and a wife to an amazing husband.
❤️ I am passionate about what I do. I love that even after 12+ years of working I am still learning new things EVERY SINGLE DAY. Every day is different from the next.
❤️ I am an avid swimmer. It's the one sport I've continued from childhood to now and even when I'm slow, being in the water brings my mind and body such great peace.
❤️ I love to sew, creating projects and clothing has been such a joy for me especially when creating for others. I even pattern test and model for pattern companies 🤫
❤️ I love to read. As my brain is constantly moving and sometimes life doesn't let me settle to read, audiobooks have been my go to. I'm currently reading Fourth Wing but love suspense and psychological thriller books.

What we know from research about creating a strong reading basis for kids is that Phonological awareness is key. What does this mean?

Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the parts of words and sentences. This includes:
🔤Syllable and word segmentation - clapping out or recognizing the syllables in words and words in sentences
🔤 Onset/Rhyme - recognizing and creating rhyming pairs
🔤Phonemic awareness - recognizing each letter has sound(s) associated with it
🔤 Alliteration - matching words by initial sounds
🔤 Isolating/Segmenting/manipulating/adding and deleting - working with the sounds in words to be able to add, drop, combine and understanding how these words change

A lot of programs and classes focus on sight words but if you want your biggest bang for your buck, working on a child's phonological awareness will create the biggest impact in their overall reading ability. Is your child struggling with reading? Message me to see how I can help and follow for more fun pre-reading activities 📚

Back from vacation and as tough as it was to get everyone out the door yesterday morning, seeing my clients after a break is always the BEST!

We checked out Calgary zoo and Granary road . Have you been? It's such a fun place to explore for kids of all ages. So many areas and learning! My kids loved the ant farm the best 🐜😂

A new research study (Lenhart et al.) found that reading to children from an earlier age (before age 1) predicted better vocabulary and grammar skills and led to more shared reading skills at preschool age. 📘📙📗

I've been quiet on here but holy moly has July flown by! I have been busy working and fitting in all the summer kids and spending my days off exploring the outdoors with my kids and friends.

Did you know that in the summer the Lois Hole Centennial park offers daily nature walks and programming for kids? We went to the mammal one today where the kiddos learned about mammals, played a super fun life cycle game, and then we went pond skimming and learned about all the different kind of bugs. The kiddos loved it and the leader was awesome! If you are nearby check it out- their link is on their Facebook and it's free!

Exploring the outdoors is a perfect way to build vocabulary, following directions, and model longer sentences! What are you up to this lovely Friday?

Language comprehension!

When individuals have difficulty with this it's like someone is writing on a blackboard and you are trying to copy but someone is furiously erasing right behind them. 📋

Individuals that struggle with language comprehension:
🧠have trouble integrating the verbal and nonverbal code of imagery
🧠often miss instructions in school because they are not able to understand and translate what they are hearing into a cohesive piece into their mind
🧠difficulty following directions
🧠weak imagery leads to difficulty with critical and logical abstract thinking and problem solving
🧠difficulty with attention and focus
🧠difficulty effectively expressing oneself- in children this can lead to physical means to communicate to compensate (i.e., pushing hitting)
🧠 difficulty with mental mapping
🧠difficulty with social situations

So what do we do?
- seek help from an SLP!
- note taking to support gathering the small parts before combining them into a whole
- VISUALS VISUALS VISUALS - Visuals of tasks, visual reminders, written instructions (to support verbal)
- understand that difficulty comprehending language and reading comprehension does not equal behaviour! These children/teens require support and not discipline to help with their listening skills!

Let's talk about the importance of play 🎉

▶️ Play is how children engage and interact with the world around them as they grow and learn.
▶️ Play is important for healthy brain development
▶️ Play allows children to explore and learn in an environment comfortable and familiar to them
▶️ Skills in communication, fine motor, and gross motor are all learnt while playing
▶️ Play promotes physical activity
▶️ Play promotes problem solving, interaction, turn taking, and many other social skills
🧠PLAY BUILDS BRAINS🧠

So what does this mean for therapy?

Meeting children where they are at in play will give us the biggest benefit when working on their communication. It is engaging, safe, and best of all fun!
